    I5 into audi 80 b4

I am sure this will have been covered somewhere but cant find it!
There is an abundance of 2.0l 4 cylinder auto 80s and 90s here in NZ.
What is involved in fitting a 2.3 i5 into the B4.
I was thinking transmission or engine mount issues etc?
The engines sometimes come up for sale with or without transmissions (usually auto).
Sometimes a wrecked 2.3 car comes up but getting rare.
    Any info appreciated.

The B4 body shells were apparently were built with accommodation for FWD or 4WD... so you CAN easily convert a 2.0L FWD B4 saloon into quattro as long as you have B4 subframe, wishbones and other running gear from a B4 quattro donor... you don't need to cutaway bodywork for a transmission tunnel etc.

There must be someone on here who has already done such conversion. I seem to recall something different about engine mounts between 4cyl and 5 cal but you would need to search or hope for others to respond here with better memory than me !

I have helped a few guys with 20VT transplants into other B3/B4 body shells - its straight forward if you aren't afraid of some electrical spaghetti into the fusebox etc

Is this verified and true? As it makes my plan of finding a saloon a he'll of a lot easier

B4 bodyshell is universal - FWD, quattro, 1.6, 2.2T, LHD, RHD and so on. 91. - 93. FWDs even has rear threads for rear subframe. 4cyl and 5cyl engine mounts are the same except front one, but thats bolt-on part. V6 engine mounts are different.

It's true. All of the holes for subframe/suspension are there. I recall two of the holes not having captive nuts in them, but that's fixable. The only thing missing is the prop support in the back of the tunnel, if I remember correctly.

              not so on b3 though.

if its a b3 4 pot you need 5 pot mounts. 4pot mounts engine and gearbox to subframe

from what ive found so far there's doing it and doing it right.

many little differences between s2 and other 80's. not as many on b4 as b3 but I want old school(er)

engine mounts, strut brace, wiring looms and thickness, battery n wiring, fan wiring, steering rack and boot sizes, front arms, shocks, brake cylinders.... the list goes on.

                    Wouldn't a smarter swap be a 1.8T or 2.0TFSI into an ex-4 cyl B4 80?

Have you forgotten this is a 20VT forum - teehee !

Seriously though - The 1.8T and 2.0TFSI engines would need B5 or B6 instruments and OE immobiliser hacks and such for them to work properly. Not saying impossible, certainly a PITA and who wants to do an engine swap for a 4-cyl soundtrack anyway ?

If the 5-cyl 20VT attaches directly onto the 4-cyl mounting points on the B4 then it makes for a simple life as all the B4 quattro running gear transfers over along with ABY/ADU loom and clocks from any 5-cyl B3 or B4.

                          What about a v8?
I'd like one in my quattro avant.

V8 transplants into B3 or B4 have been done before. Can't remember where I saw it - one of the US based forums I think.

There's been one on here but not much detail on the conversion.
Motor geek has quite a few a4 v8 conversions , but I prefer the b4 shape (and I already have a v6 avant quattro).
