Wanted: Crank locking tool or further info...

I need to do a cambelt change over Christmas. Got all the bits already except for the tool that lock the crank.

Can someone give me a part number for this tool? Did anyone get one from the main dealer? Price and lead time appreciated. I might have an alternative source but I need the part number first.

Alternatively, is anyone willing to rent one to me for a week while I do mine? I will collect and return the tool and reward anyone who can help out a fellow S2 owner! Planning to do it in the few days before Crimbo.

    Thanks a lot.

Doug, you are a star! Time to dust of the trusty old OTT arc welder.

One quick question, assuming you have made one: what are the nominal slot dimensions (width and length)? I want it to be tight in there. I would like to make one before I strip the front end if poss.

I have not made one - found that site a few weeks ago and knew it would save a few quid in the future.

Someone on here has one - I've been offered a lend - but can't find the PM - Who was it?

                    Have you seen my welding

It was the cambelt change - bit daunting. Would probably want to do the Valve Styem Oil Seals at the same time. I've seen a pic of a tool for doing this while the head is still on the car.

I'm assuming if the head comes off, it needs skimmed?

Way to go Lee + Doug!! please, please, pretty please Lee, can I have one please :-))

I'll have her in bits again soon to do the turbo install, so no better time to change a belt than when doing the turbo and Samco hoses :-))

I think??????????? I'm right in saying that providing you get both the cam and crank timing marks perfectly aligned, then turn her over by HAND!! a few times to check for anything connecting that shouldn't! ie pistons and valves!! then that's all you need to do really. When I had all my stuff apart some months back, Tom talked me through how to check it and make sure it was aligned properly over the phone (thanks Tom ) mine was ok after checking the marks etc and has run fine since I had the belt off. The timing mark on the flywheel is out a bit, but this is normal I'm lead to believe and the flywheel timing mark isn't really used on our ABY's.

I'd love to get my hands on something like this Lee!!

                          Hi Guys,
I suppose that tool might work out of the car, but with the engine installed?.
Anyway, I have the correct tools, including that cranked socket thing. I also have a torque wrench up to 500ft/lbs.
Not sure how to offer these to fellow listers. Posting them is risky and expensive.
However if you are local to Wilts, might be able to work something out.
                          Feel free to pm me.
                          Robin.

That tool would work in the car i assume cos on that link it says that the tool is wedged against the engine mount.....

i assume thats how it was meant to be used anyway

I have changed many cambelts and always double check the timitng marks against the firing of a particular cylinder near TDC. My Scirocco was really messed up mhen I got it. None of the marks lined up at all and the distributor was way off. Had to start from scratch working out when it should be firing and what the valve position would be for crank rotation. Was a complete beeatch but we got it right and did the final timing with the strobe. Had some fum too playing around with the timing to see if we could get it to go faster!

What do you start the bidding at for one of these lovely beauties then Martyn? Could get them made out of stainless for logevity if you like. Sexiest tool in your toolbox I tell ya. Cut the slot with a mill to get it true and some lovely welds in there too. I know just the man for the job (and he's cheap)! He made my dad's 6m x 1.5m cattlegrid for about 400 quid all in. It took him about two weeks. This should take him 2 minutes!
