You can get a set of Sachs/Boge OE dampers from eBay for less than £200 if you're prepared to spend a bit of time searching and cross referencing part No's...
The only reason I know this is I've just purchased a pair of Sachs front dampers for my B3 80 project.
If your after the strut housing's themselves then all the 55mm front's are the same so can come from a V6 or late 3B, the rears are all 55 mm you just need to be sure you get a pair with the mounting points for drop links.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.
1992 C4 2.8 Avant quattro
1994 MTM RS2.
1998 B5 TDI quattro Sport.

It's the housings themself,
mine are pretty badly corroded on the front spring cups and the rear drop link mounting points broke off on dissasebly. Getting them welded up and new mounting points welded on hopefully will be fine but would certainly like better condition ones to replace them with.
I am also considering BC coilovers but the current refurb has already been a bit sore so will maybe have to wait plus I would like to keep the standard shocks and springs as they are good for the roads around here.
