I'm not using 996 monoblocks.. and that's a good point I'd better check what my caliper will take. But the question is - why won't they take a bigger disc? I can see the disc thickness being an issue but why diameter?

I don't think my pads cover the entire width of the disc even with the 314mm's on!1994 Audi S2 Avant - in pieces

This is a very valid point... The 996 pads dont have a swept area big enough for even the 314mm discs. I'm going down the 323 route regardless, as its all bolt on. These bigger discs have higher thermal capacity than a 314 or smaller of course, but its not that beneficial - especially when you factor the extra unsprung weight and rotational mass.
If I was doing it again - I'd go with 314's and have them spun down to 307 so as to work with 996 monos and a modified Seat or RS2 carrier. That will fit inside 16" Avus.

Thats why you need ferodo's
Ive gone with 996 monoblocks, A8 323x30mm discs, ferodo ds2500 pads, seat carriers.
At a rough estimation:
callipers: £410
discs: £100
pads: £100
carriers: £40
pad fitting kit: £16
bolts: £20
labour (inc milling carriers): £200
Total: £886
Already has SS hoses on the front

I think you can machine the 996 caliper to take a larger disc. I had some megane calipers which looked close to a 996 originally and they were going to work with the armoured S8 345x30mm discs. Again, you apparently need to machine the groove which the disc sits inside of the caliper in order for it to sweep the disc correctly. I have no idea how much if any that affects the rigidity of the caliper though.
The 345x30 is a brembo disc (oem from Audi) and now stocked in GSF....might be a good few £££ cheaper than the a6 347x30 for the sake of 2mm. They sure are heavy though!!!
Personally at that size, i think the value of the rs6 setup comes into play as at least they are build in such a way as to minimise the unsprung weight and you get 8 pots too

Sonic - do the Ferodo's have more of a sweep on the disc? I'm buying them to go on the car before Croft anyway, just haven't got round to it yet (and don't have a spare £100 lying around either..)
s2driveruk - I had seen the 345mm disc in the EBC spreadsheet, but they don't have a hat height listed for it so I was unsure if it'd be suitable. Is the hat height 59mm on that disc, the same as the 314mm?1994 Audi S2 Avant - in pieces

i *think* it was the same hat as the 323mm version but you can check on the brembo site as they have the drawing with measurements.sigpic
