- G40's are great, if a little raw. Not ideal as a 'sensible' second car though.

Mk1 = Audi 50 Hatchback shape, proper old school, round headlights
Mk2 = introduced 'Breadvan' shape, still round headlights
Mk3 = Same bodyshell as Mk2, but rectangular headlights and larger rear lights
Mk4, Mk5, Mk6 = 'Modern' shared platform hatch shape, same as Seat Ibiza, eventually Skoda Fabia etc.

i'm a big mk3 golf man, had a 1.4 as my first car, full gti kit and everything, storm grey. would like one as a track car but cant afford 2 fun cars the polo will the have nice 'chuckability' thats lost on the s2 you'll have to do a ring lap in it though!!

I had a 2.0 8v GOlf 3 Driver with 140bhp & 145ftlbs. It wasn't fast but I did have 100Kgs of stereo in it!

Mk3 Polos are great fun owing to their weight. My mate was amazed when he got out of his Mk3 VR6 and had a go in the G40 - he almost sold his VR6 and went shopping for a G40.

If I didn't have the S2 then a G40 would be an option but I can't afford to have 2 quite expensive cars to run. What sort of MPG do you get out of it? I'd just be worried about the G-Lader I think...

They're also £1k over my small budget

The fuel economy of a G40 is all dependant on your right foot (just like any car I suppose). They are no where near as bad as the S2. 30-40mpg is easily doable for mixed driving. It's only a 1275cc engine and only runs about 0.7 bar. Mines had nothing done to it - smaller pully, chipped, flowed for example - it's bloody good fun in original spec.

The G-ladder is fine on the G40. The G60 was always more stressed and was renowned for going fut. Reading the G40 forum and others over the years I don't think that I've ever seen a report of a none played with G-ladder going fut. Play with one at your peril! My charger did over 100,000 miles before I got it serviced by Jabbersport (I bought it with 118,000 miles on it).

The prices are good at the moment. They seem to be going for around £1000 depending on condition. They're great cheap fun and very practical.

Not if you look on PH but that's the norm I suppose. £2k seems to be average.

My right foot is made of solid lead! No hope of exercising any self control so I have to get a small engined car and limit myself through physics
