Funny! I've been looking for the exact same box for a couple of months with no joy what so ever. Cheapest rebuild quote was between £300-400 but I've not found a used one anywhere. After doing some research it would appear that there is a huge problem with these and some other polo gearboxes. They brake for fun, indeed I have a reciept showing that the gearbox in my Polo was replaced in December 06 and it's now playing up again. I noticed that there was a guy on a VW forum that has replaced his 3 times in 18 months. I think it's disgraceful that VW won't accept any responsibility for all these failures given that they're supposed to pride themselves on their build quality and reliability.

      U'll be lucky...

Girlfriend blew her gearbox up twice on a '96 1.4 Plopo...first rebuild cost £600 and lastest 18 months...threw the car away after it went a second time...then bought a Rover.

      Hope yas find one...

      Cheaper option...buy a Golf mk11.

My missus has what was originally a 1.0L Polo '98 model, the 3rd piston ring broke, and grabbed near enough ruining the engine, luckily my Step-Dad's a mechanic and had a spare SEAT 1.4L engine, as it's almost identical to the VW lump bar the cylinders & pistons we slotted that in with the original gearbox!

The car's great now, and as it uses the 1.0L gearbox it flies through it's gears, so, what I'm trying to say is, why not look at the smaller VW, SEAT & Skoda's to see if their 'boxes will fit in, it may lose some top speed but for town use that's a bonus, and it maybe cheaper.

Still going to have a look at the Polo. It a 2000 model and covered 40000miles.

If it was for me i would buy the golf over the Polo.

What happens on these 1.4 polo and golf gearboxes is the final drive crown wheel rivets have a tendency to come off and smash holes in the gearbox side.

This can be overcome by drilling all the rivets out and replacing them with a bolt kit for about £40 and fixing the crack in the gearbox casing.

I did one about a year ago and they go together ok.

Thats about ready to go then!
Most common is the bearing spinning in the casing, on the lay shaft I seem to remember.

Best of with a 94/95 Polo coupe! 1.0.
