I've had my 3B Coupe for many years now, bought for £2750 (which was very cheap at the time) and only needed a few vac and boost pipes replacing to run sweet as, of course I've spent more thousands than I care to think about since then on upgrades but it was a good car and I've put 100,000 miles on it.. I also do trail riding and trackdays on my motorbikes and surfing in summer and have a concealed towbar and trailer and a roof rack, the coupe is surprisingly practical with the seats folded down, a decent load space spoiled only by the spare wheel. In fact I've had an entire spare coupe interior in the back with the seat base removed.
Having said that I've just bought an avant to see if I like driving one, it doesnt have the looks of the coupe though for me..

      I agree.
Another thing that always makes me laugh is the amount of previous owners a car has got.
For me, that is irelivant, as its CURRENT condition is a lot more important than anything else!

Buy as much as you can afford and enjoy and fix it wen it needs it and you should be k. I had a coupe and it was ok for bits and bobs but I now have an avant and is so much better for trips and weekends away full of surf boards, dog (rarely as don't want to ruin car) and a few bikes for trial rides and car parts! It's so much easier having a slipper wagon and still shows up .... A saphire cossie, new m3, and anyone with a noisy nova like thing. The looks you get when they lose to an estate is better than the looks of them losing to a coupe.

Hi Newsh, interesting! you saying that the coupe is as versatile as you say it is i think i now defiantly want a coupe!

Dest - definitely number of previous owners doesn't mean a thing in my book! who really cares if the car has had "one previous lady owner... but 6 others"

          haha a slipper wagon!

right so now i know i want a coupe this search can now be narrowed down!

you could buy a more costly low miler and need to fix the "100K" syndrome.

ive not had to fix much but i have spent about 5k proactively on non engine performance parts.

too true i guess a slightly higher millage one would have already had all those pieces changed.... but on the flip side more millage = more wear so the little things will be going too and i can imagine that anything engine wise will just be too expensive.... this s2 game sounds worse then Russian roulette!!!!

at least its not a corrado. they cost 2x id say to put right.

the way id look at it is.

1 find a solid body, expect some rust and damage due to age. nothing is mint at this age.
                2. make sure it starts ok and doesn't smoke. lots of little issues are easily fixed with the help of the forum.
                3. get one with an MOT ideally. it could otherwise be a can of worms.
                4. judge your mechanical knowhow. if you have worked on cars before ie you can do a service yourself it helps. labour is costly.
                5. look to overhaul some parts initially. expect the top mounts and suspension to have had better days. subframe bushes and arm bushes the same.

same as any car minefield the S2 game. maybe go out in a few cars first. not for sale ones owned ones who can give you an experience breakdown. we can all wax lyrical about our cars. some may think we are deluded and they are crocks of **** when the owner thinks its good.

where you based lizard? maybe you can get a ride in a members car or 2. maybe state your performance goals too.

I think mine cost about £10k to restore when I added up all the receipts (for only parts), I did go a little overboard and replaced everything tho.

                    mine stands me bout 15k.

                    i paid over 5k 3 years ago for a sub 100k example.

                    i have spent about ish

                    1.5k on management and gauges
                    500 on engine work.
                    2k on engine bolt-ons
                    1k exhaust
                    2 k on chassis
                    1.5k on brakes

labour for everythin g has been FOC. i built the engine did electrics and tunied it. other mate did most of other bits of fitting whilst i did my bits. good friends are hard to find.

                    motto is modify hot replace.

nothing to worry about on these cars if you can work on it yourself.
Buy as good as you can afford and be prepared to have to spend some cash & spanner time on it pretty regularly.
You only need to worry if you have to pay for your labour as thats when these cars become uneconomic as they are not easy to work on most of the time.

I'm in Battersea so not too far away!

Bought my S2 in April which was standard at the time.

I've now chipped it, added Porsche brakes, RS2 IC, RS2 airbox and have a pile of other parts which I need to fit.

My advice would be to buy a forum members car who has made all the basic upgrades already ie brakes and chips. As you will more than likely want to make it a little bit faster when you realise how easily it can be done!

yup that was the plan.. i really liked that black one with the rs4 replica alloys which is/was up for sale... just a little bit outside my budget tbh.
