1994 Audi 80 - 2.0 8v (slow but reliable!) -
well it will be in the for sale section tonite remember just coz a car got low mileage doesnt mean its been looked after its probably done more urban driving so clutches indicators the door locks get used more and are more liable to fail, some of the higher mileage cars do tend to be serviced better as they need to be more reliable spend £500 less than your budget coz you always wont to do something to the car straight away
have good fun looking for the right car

let me give you some advice when looking for an S2, I bought mine about 6 weeks ago and wish someone could have told me what I know now, before I bought mine.
I bought a black ABY coupe with 126'000, abit tatty on the body work and interior but nothing that couldn't be sorted out. It went well on the test drive, had lots of service history, pretty much everything worked so I parted £4500 for it.
The air-con doesn't work but you CANNOT afford to be that fussy. In 2007 there where 380 s2 coupes on the road in the UK, what you need to remember is that you're almost never going to find the perfect car, you will have to make a sacrifice when you buy one or be prepared to spend abit of money on it. If you where looking to buy a saxo VTR then fine, you can afford to dismiss one with faulty aircon, there are probably 380'000 of them on the road and you'll find another one to go and look at the same day.
6 weeks after having bought mine I have spent over £2k on it. First thing to let go was the turbo, then the coil packs, then the n75 boost valve, then the dump valve, and then the cylinder head cracked and its had to have a full top end rebuild. This is before I've even got the chance to tidy the body work and interior. Its now on a sorn and I can't afford to drive it. The air-con not working is the last of my worries!!
S2's are not cheap cars to run, especially ABY. If you drive it normally around town you struggle to get 20mpg. Drive it hard and you'll be looking at about 15mpg. Repair bills are expensive and parts are expensive and difficult to find (unless you know the right people) which is why you need to buy right in the first place.
You want to find one thats been well looked after that is in sound mechanical condition. I would find someone who is more familiar with these cars than you are, and get them to look at a car with you. mileage doesn't mean anything. Low mileage cars are quite likely to have been clocked anyway, and there are ways to make the paperwork look genuine to go with it, trust me, I know people that do it.
I'm not trying to put you off buying one, because they are incredible cars, but it all comes at a price.Comment

sounds a nightmare. was it a private sale or dealer? any reputable dealer should be prepared to put most of that right.

thanks for the advice.
i've been working in reliability engineering for Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines (F1 engines) so i have a very good idea on the affect of mileage on components and powertrains...
Put it this way, im not going to part with my money until i find the right car, the one that makes me think wow! it'll come along soon im sure!1996 Audi S2 - 295bhp and 326lb/ft - Complete Rebuild Project

surely the number of heat cycles and cold start-ups that an engine that does short journeys is far more damaging than a high motorway mileage car.....?thanks for the advice.

a very small amount of damage, but whos to say that a low mileage car has only been used around town? could just be a genuinely low mileage. but components only have a limited life cycles also....1996 Audi S2 - 295bhp and 326lb/ft - Complete Rebuild Project

and agree with jamo, either that or listen to forum members who know people's cars as in general you post a picture/some info of a car up with i'm interested in this car and within a half hour etc, either someone knows it, owned it or can point out anything that may be wrong with it.
