    ABY Engine Wanted

    Hi all,

I'm looking for an ABY engine in good condition, to replace the smoky horror in my '95 S2 Avant.

I may only need the bottom end (pressure test on head pending...), but I'll take a complete one.

I'm based in Northants & the engine will be going to Bahnstorm Tuning in Northampton for fitting.

    Cheers, Iain

If you motor is smoking it's more likely to be the head ,valve stems worn and stem seals than the bottom end in my experience .
Pressure testing the head will prove nothing , if the stems are tossed the engine sucks oil past into the cylinders when the valves are open, the valves can seal just fine when on there seats but it will still burn oil.
I'm not saying the bottom end isn't tossed but is not common unless it has been miss treated in the past, no regular oil change etc.

my valve stem oil seals are smoking so it could just be as mentioned a head off job.....it all depends on your plans for your avant.....

good luck with what you decide..

The old engine's already out & the head removed at Bahnstorm. The thinking there is that it is (probably) the bottom end that's the issue, not the head. I have roughly the same mechanic ability as my dog, so I'm sticking to their opinion. The bottom end has been roughly welded in various spots at some point

I've got a very tight budget for this at the mo', so exploratory surgery on the whole lump simply isn't an option, otherwise I'd just get the original engine stripped right down & re-built. Replacing this one with a known good engine/making a good one from the two is the cheaper solution & means I'm not slithering around in the ice in my '86 BMW M6 while it dissolves from the salt!

We thought we had a good one lined up from VRS Northampton for 400 quid, but it turned out to be needing work too.

I'm not looking for anything special or modified (yet!), just one that's good & solid & gets me back on the road.

Topsparky, thanks for the offer, but it's beyond my budget at the mo' & I've been told would need a bit of modifying to fit an S2.

Thanks for the input guys, & for the pm's, hopefully she'll be alie & drifting again soon!

Not sure who told you the AAN would need modifying?

You would need to change IM, front pulley and attach your PAS bracket/alternator etc. The actual engine is the same.

However, you are probably fairly unlikely to get a cheap good one.

I would say that as posted before, its generally the stem seals on the valves, or the turbo that will make it smoke. both of which are a fairly quick fix.

                  Madpugger;
Valves are fine, turbo's a Turbo Technics recon that's done less than 100 miles since fitting. That isn't the problem.

If I had the funds available, I'd be happy to take a AAN to replace the ABY, extra fitting costs an' all.... just can't afford it at the mo'.

I'm juggling a bunch of classic cars, that all suddenly need attention this winter. I've been told that it may be best if I scrap the S2, in order to try & regain some of the expenses I've already laid out on her.

I do not want to do that at all, at all!

                    Ok that's fair enough

There really would be no more expense fitting an AAN block because the bits you need to change are likely on your car (ie off your engine) already. The reason I say this is that you may have more luck getting an AAN than aby, or it at least doubles your chances. Even if you got a complete AAN, it would take no time to fit. The inlet Manifold needs swapped, and front pulley. The bracket I said needs swapped and alternator etc, they would need fitted even if your engine was put back in so not an additional cost.

Are the bores glazed on your bottom end? A de glaze and a set of rings would probably sort it, especially as the head is off already, drop the sump and pull the pistons out and see if the rings are gummed up in the bores.. Rings are about 250 quid IIRC.

They are £250 as I just bought a set from Audi and fitted them.

I think the worst thing about the bottom end, is that it's cracked before & been badly welded. I haven't got any photos of it (though Acidburn did put one up on a different thread), Bahnstorm say it's just not worth the risk off re-using it.

I haven't been able to give the S2 much thought in the last week or so. My girlfriends A4 was written off on a dual carriageway & she's still having physical problems from it. My bank account was targeted & drained dry by an unauthorised withdrawal, left me with 50 quid to my name! I'm supposed to be getting re-imbursed..... eventually!

I've made a definite decision not to scrap her though.

I'm in the process of thinning my vehicle fleet, so once one or two have gone, I should be able to afford a good lump. I'll just put her in a corner until then.

                          Cheers, Iain

Aye, poor lass is looking a bit sorry for herself.
I must get her moved back to the farm, monday hopefully.

Another one breaking? Shame, even more reason to save mine. What's the lump like on that one? Expensive/spoken for?
