What is the part number of yours? I have a couple which might fit.

I've got 2 units, both suffer from the same problem. They seem to function properly when first plugged in, but after a few minutes, random buttons stop working

Do I need to do something with VAG COM when I plug the climate head unit in for the first time? Part numbers of my two units are:

        4AO 820 043 H

        4AO 820 043 K

        Anyone seen this before?

        Cheers,
        Tom

You need to resolder front panel connections. This is the main reason of non working buttons on these units.

Thanks for that - useful link.

The only weird thing is that I tested every button/function when I initially plugged the unit in and it was working fine. It was only after being used for a few minutes that it started to go wrong.

I know when you install new fan motors you need to 'adapt basic settings' on VAGCOM so wondered whether there's a procedure you need to go through in VAGCOM when swapping in a different CC head unit?

Probably best I get the multimeter out and check the circuit board in any case. Can anyone who's handy with this kind of thing translate this paragraph from the link above into plain English?

"Its a good idea to check for continuity on all of the various contacts throughout the board. Use a multimeter set on continuity check, and check between the contacts for the switches, and the ribbon cable studs."

So, to add to the confusion the head unit was working fine this morning. Tested every single button/function and they all worked as they're supposed to. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it all goes wrong again on the way home.

Anyone seen this sort of behaviour before? I don't think it can be the soldering on the board - seems much more like a software glitch. Does the system go through any kind of check when it starts up? Do you need to have fully functioning motor flaps in place etc? All very weird...

What exactly your symptom is Tom?intermittent button working?BTDT on couple of cc units.
It's just like sometime the button just won't working every single buttons.sometime it's only
Working on some buttons.let's say the fan speed is just fine but the air recirculation just ceased.
I have replaced with another cc unit and the symptom is exactly almost the same as stock cc unit.
I have tried to pull off the cc panel and finished the contact cleaning.unfortunately, that didnt work out.
Until i got another cc unit from the member.and it works just fine.i think there must be some short
On the cc circuit board or some resistor is shot.the symptom is just sometime it works fine and sometime not.
Try to get another good known cc unit from another car and test it.i bet your cc unit is shot.

I had this same problem when I bought my C4 over Two years ago and was pointed to above Audiworld article
The bad joints were barely visible but they were there and heat expansion would be enough to cause problems
I re-soldered them all and have had no problems since

Yes I had exactly the same intermittent issues. It's the ribbon cable socket solder joints on the front panel electronics. A careful reheating of the joints and only applying new solder where necessary will sort it. Watch out for any of the 4 plastic clips too as if broken they allow the front panel pcb board to move away from the buttons when you push them. If you pack the rear of the front panel with a few layers of thick cardboard behind the pcb board it will prevent this. Good luck.

a friend had similar symptoms with their klimatronic. Buttons working intermittently etc.

we tried a couple of other units and sometimes they worked sometime they didnt.

Recently i bought a unit from a forum member here, which was from an A6 and it couldnt work due to wrong part numbers. Then what we did was open the unit, disconnect the front plate(has only one plug) and we connected that to the back bit of the unit from his rs2. So the front plate from the A6 had perfectly working buttons while the back was from an rs2. Putting the 2 together meant that he had a good working unit to play with.

So if you find a unit that doesnt have the correct part number, all you need to do is open the unit up, 6 screws, then just disconnect the plug and plug it to your own back piece.

Just take your time, don't use too much solder and you will be fine :-)

Hi! I've the same problem too. But I've a question:
when you put ONLY HOT AIR, the radiator fan runs?

I think that is wrong. I understand if I turn on the compressor but if I put only the interior fan and later I select hot temp; I think that not run.

                              I'm true??
