Belt and braces really, like doweling the flywheel or strapping the freeze plugs - hopefully you'll never need them but a bit its a bit "safety net" I guess.

Out of interest, what are peoples preferred method of cam pulley counter-holding while torquing the bolt, since there are no pins etc. I have previously used an old cambelt to hold it steady but its not ideal

Set of molegrips on the exhaust cam on a cast section to torque the cam pulley up. That way the torque is a clamping load and you are not putting strain on the keyway. Aftermarket cams and later engines come with a casting to put a spanner on the cam itself.

I've bought an adjustable cam pulley from Rosten and the key looks very small so I'm going to do the same as James and get it pinned

did you get what appears to be half a key?.....
I had already purchased one from TPS.
When "Santa" brought my adjustable gears from Rosten the key looked tiny....about half the size of a stock one...

Yes, sounds like the one I got. Might not be 100% necessary, but I'll sleep better knowing it's done
