You don't want one with the "adjust screw".
The "adjust screw" is calibrated from factory. If that is ever touched, the MAF is scrap.

That's why that stuff was *removed* from the outside and made harder to access on the later models.

Also, when they age, they start running rich at low end and lean up top, eventually you get codes.
I would not even consider a used MAF. Or at least have a receipt that shows it's been purchased recently.

Every single 10+ year old MAF I have seen on these cars. And I've seen more than 40 of them, has been bad or going bad from measurements.
Buy an RS2 MAF, they are the cheapest.

Mines the other way round, lean (low revs) rich (higher)

Great garage Hot wire MAF's of this type are not adjustable manually in anyway, they really should know that. If it wasn't knackered before it is now.

Anyway I'd take Dmitri's very good advise and buy a new RS2 one, as he say's they go out of calibration over the years and are then scrap. Well, they can be reconditioned but it's easier to just buy new.

If looking for a MAF I'd just bite the bullet and purchase a new RS2 one. It's a false economy buying unknown second hand units. It's likely they will be reading a little out and could fail completely at any-time, unlikely but quite possible.

As far as I'm aware the car shouldn't even run with no signal from the engine speed sensor, who's doing the diagnostics and what system are they using?

                          Boost leak.
What are you using to determine "rich" or "lean" anyway? Do you have a Wideband O2 installed?

Yes, you have an air leak somewhere.

I just re-read this. Yeah, I think they see the "no-signal" code at idle...

@OP - Don't just WALK away from this garage, RUN away.
They have no idea what they are doing. Get it out of there until they do more damage.

Also, as K Simmonds said, your maf is knackered now if they touched the screw, you will need a new one.
