You can easily shorten the OEM hose. There is no valve in it, I cut one up.
There is a perforated plasic tube inside that controls the noise. You need to retain this tube and insert it correctly back into the hose end once you have trimmed the hose down. Then just get the new hose end swaged on

I have seen to types that could work, one with very flat loops the other with very vertical ones off a 80 with servo and hydraulic pump

Done that with an aftermarket hose. Didn't work at all. The noise was excessive

That's why I said reuse the OEM hose and liner. If the job is done right there is no problem. The hose liner needs to be cut longer than the outer hose and inserted correctly in the hose end, as per the OEM hose.

Ive read a lot about this conversion on here, and had a chat with a few users
recently at a show i attended

Why dose this power steering hose keep getting mentioned?
Other than sharing the same fluid reservoir and 2 completely separate sides of the same pump, I fail to see the relationship perhaps its a LHD thing

The only problem I see in the RHD format is the A/c pipe in that area and even if it dose get in the way its a relatively easy fix.

If your fussy this is the single pump from LHD V6 80 you need if you would rather not bodge a perfectly good twin pump.

I believe there is an A4 solution too

Definitely following this, going to do the same to my s2 avant, with auxiliary vac tank. Not sure what I am going to do about power steering though.

I think this inner plastic lining which is perforated needs to be matched with a rubber rather than a braided high pressure hose and the ends which may or may not have curves may also play their role.
In my case one shop used one of the ends and an alloy fitting on the rack side, used the complete perforated plastic tubing and the noise was horrible.

That is when I replaced the hose with an original and all noises dissappeard.

I don't know what it is that makes these audi made hoses unique but I haven't seen anyone being able to replicate them. If someone decides to modify them be sure to have a second hand ready.

By the way on rhd cars the aforementioned hose is not required as the size of the servo does not foul the hose on the rack and therefore you can get away with using the original rack to pump hose. I'm pretty sure that I have seen photos on here with a normal hose being used.
Its only the lhd cars that have this issue.

Alex, have a look in my v8 thread.

I used a servo from a 10v and fitted straight on with my 20v master cylinder.
I've gone to electric power steering, but it shouldn't be hard to find a pump that will fit in the standard place with just the one output.
I'll have a look this weekend, I've got an a8 pump which might do the trick.

There is a part number for that pump and all you need is a bracket. I will have to look it up

The D2 A8 and early B5 have a single stage pump that will work, of course the 10v single stage pump will also be fine, but probably harder to come by
The A8 pump is 120 bar though

I had a spare refurbished back home to keep handy just in case, so I will be able to look up the part number.
