Is this saying that the hot film MAF as a direct replacement will not give the benefits of increased power range, i.e. +350hp? Or did I read that wrong?
I'd be interested in doing the conversion, but it would seem a bit pointless going for the direct replacement if i didn't get any benefits on a 380-400hp car. Though, you could argue that isn't so far off the scale anyway i guess.
Guess I'm just trying to see if it's worth changing on a chipped RS2; I'd want to keep the RS2 airbox too.

I think a middle man connector is best way forward unless i can find a source of jpt6 male plugs - they are very elusive unfort.Leave a comment:

I don't think a programmable voltage conditioner is the way to go.
It is a lot cheaper/easier to just modify the ECU to accept the new MAF, rather than come up with a voltage conditioner and what not...
Especially since you would have to re-calibrate the MAF inside the ECU anyway to take advantage of the increased range.
Adding a piggyback is not really the solution IMO, especially since the stock ECU has all the facilities in place to do this the "right way".
Also - I see the resale value of the ECU going UP, not down due to it being able to be used with a HFM5 sensor.
This will be especially true, once the MAF's start going out of production and will cost 500+ EUR for a new one.Last edited by prj; 26 March 2011, 10:33.Leave a comment:

Maybe it would be a solution to make some kind of electronic device/transformer which transforms HFM5 signal to MAF like signal which Motronic understands without any need to change it... same idea as when ex soviet commercial radio frequency (УКВ) net was changed to Western frequency FM net and you wanted to use soviet built radios.
I believe this solution would be more attractive to possible clients..
possible pros
- plug'n'play solution which could be done in your garage
- the original motronic stays untouched this means it can be sold/bought/swapped freely
- if you have it already chipped there is no need to rechip it
- if you change your car you can easily change back to the old maf and keep the NMF5 hardware for you next 20vt car or sell it separately
possible cons
- expences in development of this electronic transformer

Paul... or someone else...
Do you know if a Male 6 pin connector exists that would plug into the connector for the old MAF (RS2)?
That way cutting off the connector could be avoided and only one wire would need to be soldered. This would simplify installation a lot and also allow the old MAF to be fitted back easier if the need should ever arise.Leave a comment:

TODO:
* Find cheap 80mm diameter bolt-in HFM5 MAF
* Source connectors
* Map car on the dyno
* Detailed installation instructions
DONE:
* Rough Installation instructions
* Software support in ECU
The translation of the "new MAF values" to "old MAF values" has an error less than 0.7% in the entire range and less than 0.3% in the majority of the usable range.
It is quick enough to rev to 7300 RPM, have not tested higher yet.Leave a comment:

ThanksFair enough - thought it was worth asking the question.
the http://www.emissioncontrols.co.uk/ site is back online again now - might be a good source for the hot film maf you need.

PMing...Ok, of course.
Your offer is really nice. Getting the car chiptuned and you get a new(and better than stock) MAF in the same deal. Not bad, since here in Finland a engine chiptuning is usually 400-600e and with that you don't even get custom dyno tuning. Dyno tuning is 800-1000+e.
How much would you wan't if you came here to Finland for custom remapping? Or I came there? Do you live in Estonia? Near Tallin?
I know a thing or two myself when it comes to remapping these engines
Plus, as Paul said, what you are saying is not possible without a rewrite of the MAF handling code in the ECU anyway.
Also, the thread you linked - the site in that thread doesn't work. Maybe a temporary thing of course.Leave a comment:

You cannot swap from MAF to HFM without some trickery from prj - he cracked the code on how the air mass scaling works. Even to keep engine in factory tune with 230bhp you would the clever code inside the Ecu.Leave a comment:

Having just replaced my MAF, I don't expect to need a new one for a while - and they can be bought from the place mentioned here: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36426 for £150 .
But while your hot film MAF kit would be good for someone still running stock chips, I think it would be much more popular if a film maf could be found which could directly swap with the stock maf without requiring a remap.
I understand this may difficult (or maybe even impossible) to do but probably most people on here already have a remap, and some of these are custom maps, so many people would not want to get rid of their tried and tested chips when replacing their maf.Last edited by mouse; 3 February 2011, 06:40.Leave a comment:

No I haven't, and I am not interested in testing any MAF's, since I already have the solution for both big turbo cars and stock cars.Hmm, my MAF just gone bad(at least it seems that way). But have to find a used one, neet to do the big maf conversion soon anyway.
Prj, have you tested Golf VR6 MAF's? http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35691Leave a comment:

It's mainly so that when your MAF breaks, you can have a nice chiptune for your car and a new MAF for an attractive price as a package.
That's what it's aimed at. People who have a working maf and a stage 1 chip, would not have anything to gain by it - until their maf breaks
