Buying A8 disc - which one?

So, about to buy A8 314mm discs. I looked at Brembo's and I've aslo thought about buying stock discs and having them grooved. But I thought you guys have a bit of BTDT to share. I did a search on this but I did not find anything that was spot on so I thought I'd ask.

The Brembo's were about €370 a pair. They are called Max I think, they are grooved with some peculiar pattern, making them right and left compatible. Probably good stuff but are they worth the dough?

Buying stock discs, they are about €100 a piece - advanced math tells me that they'll be €200 a pair. Grooving them will cost me €30 a pair, with an additional cost of €40 I'll get them surface treated (yellwo cromataion - yuck, ugly swedish to english translation but I don't know the word!!!). See link for pic of the guys work and what I meant by "yellow..."

    Rolle Slitz - groovy discs

So, a grooved and treated stock disc would be €200+€30+€40=€270. But - is there a difference in performance here? I mean, are the brembo's any better or are they just expensive? I mean, cast iron is not just cast iron so, maybe the extra dough for a Brembo Max is worth it.

So? Can't find a Swedish source for Zimmerman though. Any one know where they are fairly cheap? Oh and also - wha about Zimmerman disc? I've gathered that they are supposed to be good but that's just what I think I've learnt here on the Forum. Any ideas here?

I run 323X30 and I run Zimmerman. They are slotted and plated, word you are looking for. I have run them a year, street and a few track days, with street and track pads and have had no problems.

Brembos are little pricey and not worth the extra funds.

    Stock rotors are good.

But if you are paying 270 Euros for them slotted and plated, that is way too much.

Mine only cost me 250 USD, slotted and plated.

Can those discs you have there 90quattrocoupe fit to 100x4 bolt pattern? They seem to have loads of holes in them so im thinking it might be possible, they look meaty!
Also are you guys using 996 callipers with these discs? Whats the max thickness they take?

      thanks

Nope, 10 holes, that's 2 x 5 x 112. You would need at lest 20 holes to fit both 4 and 5 bolt, to fit 108 to 112 you'd need oval holes of 40 of them Sorry.

Where do I buy Zimmerman discs for $250??? In Europe...

          In the states.

They ship them over from Germany, and I buy them.
I can get plain Zimmermans for less than $200.

                About sizes.

I made a template that was 365mm (real size was rather 362mm). This template dropped right into my 16" Avus winter wheel, all the way down. Then I made a 375 (which was more like 372mm) and that one dropped in at about 20mm from the mounting face wheel-hub. Now, looking at AMD Technic's site, they state that a 16" wheel with a inner dia of 365 will fit a 993TT and a 322mm disc. This must mean I can cram a 323mm disc and my SEAT Brembo's in there, doesn't it? It has to work. I mean, the disc will sit more than 2cm in from the mounting face and it if it sits further in - then it won't be a problem. I'll even through in a 5mm spacer, this will give me additional clearence... It has to work... Please, any BTDT on this subject...

I checked out what brand spanking new ones, grooved from Rolle Slitz, local disc groover (is that a profession??). Not half as bad as I thought actually. I belive these are Zimmerman's.

                    A8 314 x 30: €180
                    A8 323 x 30: €190

Didn't really make life any easier.

Accroding to Zlobo's meassuremnets (thanx man!!), there is about 20-25mm room left inside the 16" wheel when you drop a 323 into it. I meassured my caliper last night. From the top of the pad it reaches out about 16mm. No, I've just assumed that the caliper is at it's "thickest" just above the pads. Now it's even more interesting to make a trial fit of all this.

How much clearence do you recomend??

So... I finally got the chance to meassure the clearence. The final word is:

                        - Without a spacer, the 323mm A8 and SEAT Brembos will NOT clear a 16" Avus wheel.

                        - A 5mm spacer won't do jack to clear this situation

                        - A 35mm spacer wil solve the problem -but as you all can think a while about the problems generated by a 35mm spacer.

No way in "the-hot-place" will a 16" Avus clear these calipers. A 314mm disc will give me about 4.5mm clearence (as the 323 just barley touched the caliper, about a pubic of clearence I think, never did crosscheck with a pubic hair but anyway..). Id 4.5mm of clearence enough or do I need more??

Should I waste money on taking out the excess material, the lip that stocks out about 5mm "under" the pads? It looks goofy but it'll prolly cost cash to fix it.. Worth it? Looks better, there is a slight performance gain (so small it won't be noticable!).

Oh yeah and, when I meassured these 16" Avuz they were 362mm ID. This means that a wheel that is 365mm would clear a 323 with thses calipers, as stated on the AMD Technic site! Just a thought, it seems the boys at AMD did their homework!

Uhhh.... 4th EDIT... Looking back at this post, 80% of the stuff written is mine. Wierd. Maybe most of my post end up that way, with me answering my own thoughts and Q's.

                          They mostly just sell brakes.

In my mind, unless the Brembo discs are proven to offer significant performance benefits over the stock ones, unless they're significantly lighter to reduce rotational mass (eg. by using a strong alloy in the centre), I'd go with the stock. Do we know for sure that the Brembo branded discs are better at resisting warp, or last longer, or anything else like that? You'll probably find that the stock discs are cast by the same people who cast the Brembos anyway!

Can I ask, what is the benefit of plating the disc surface?

Glad to see you don't want x-drilled discs though. Grooved yes, x-drilling, no.
