    HELP!!Replaced the Bomb!!Now LOUD NOISE.Power Steering PUMP??!

    ok guys.

    WELL annoyed about this
Bought a brand new bomb (much waiting as wrong one sent first)...fitted it having drained all fluid...cleaned everything up and used new mounting rubbers and so on (bit of a sod of a job)

I topped up with the correct grreen audi hydraulic fluid (New), and started her up ....after 30 seconds or so I could hear a strange sound form the front end of the car. Like a whirring grinding sound.

So I turned it off. Back on a minute later and all was quiet.......thought I would bleed the system Lock to Lock.......horrible noise again....as I get near to the end of each steering turn it squeals and sounds really upset

Left car running > identified noise as coming from power steering pump area and also there was fluid seeping fairly heavily out of that big CROSS in the top of the pump!!!!

So what now?? The Exclamation light is still as on as I dont think the pump had the guts to charge the hydraulic pressure accumulator back up???

Is my Power steering pump toast??? (hope not will mean more money into this car!)
or do you think it could just be the seal under the cross head bolt? could this cause this whirring nasty noise though?

Is there a bearing or something that can fail in the pump?

Also...worst case scenario ...how much is the pump??

All ideas and suggestions welcomed please

S2dude , i had to travel 15miles with no PAS fluid !!! The washer under the cross plug
was leaking really badly & there was no fluid in the system what so ever it was
making lots of horrible noises ... when i got home i undone the cross plug, found a
copper washer to fit it , heated up so it was cherry red & quickly tightend the plug down refilled it G200 ... no more no noises

Do a search on the forum for a repair kit

Remove PAS belt and then start the car, is the noise still there? Turn wheel from lock to lock, is the noise still there?

Cannot see the pump being noisy as there isnt much in them to go wrong, it will probably be airation, air left in the system and air getting in through the plug. I done a write up on how to strip the pump a while ago-- http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8634 The plug just screws out and an o-ring fits underneath, they are sometimes hellishly tight and need an impact screwdriver to undo them, dont know why they are so tight as its the machining which gives the o-ring the right compression not hammering the plug in tight as hell
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.--:Albert Einstein

ALsoa great guide to stripping the pump! Can I ask why you had to strip yours initially??

Heres to hoping its the o ring.

The bomb is on....but so that bloody warning light

So I had another look at the car today...a mate of mine (andyp) off the forum came round and we topped up the hydraulic fluid to the right level as it was a couple of inches off it and bingo...the noise went away

                  BUT.
The damn exclamation light is still on although when I do the bomb test it has over 40 pumps till the pedal goes hard and braking is noticeably better (apart form a disk is now binding on the pads due to highspots//another story!//)

WHat could be causing this guys??? servo??
Hydraulic pump seems ok now tho Im going to replace that seal anyway

Also....ABS light is on sometimes (was doing this before)....

could this be causing the Exclamation light to come on (and the warning light)

                  See Below//

The pump was tekkno300's (Now tekkno440???) and was very noisy due to the end float in the shaft, new thrust washers cured that though.

Mmm. Very Interesting. Thanks for that info Graham.

Could this be causing my light to come on though??!!! (if the pump had end float in the shaft?? Although its not noisy now the fluid is topped up full in the reservoir?!!)
