    Problem with 5-lug conversion

    Situation:
I was converting the B4 Quattro 4lug hubs to S2 hubs. But the front wheel bearing of B4 is 75mm and S2 wheel bearing is 82mm. This means that my current drive shaft wont fit. Rear is both on B4 and S2 75mm so no problem there.
What the hell is the solution? Is it possible, that B4 2,8 has 82mm bearing in the front and so by getting the driveshaft from 2.8 B4 I can bolt it right up to my s2 housing that I also have?!
I need some solutions fast guys. AAN engine is in and rs2 brakes waiting, so is the track.

YOU need s2 bearinghousing with 82mm bearing....or you may mill out the 75mm housing, like i did....IF YOU HAVE THE BIG HOUSING,you mesure outside the housing, and if you have 100mm,and 75mm inner, you may mill out to 82mm, IF YOU HAVE ONLY 90MM OUTER DIA outside: DO NOT MILL OUT!!!

I have S2 bearinghousing but the driveshaft is too small to fit as it's made to fit 75mm bearing. Only option, that I see, is to replace the driveshaft or to find a bearing that has 82mm outside diameter and so to say "small" inner. But anyway i'm going to look at some 2.6 driveshafts as according to ETKA 2.6 and 2.8 are different. Only I need to find out, if they fit 82mm bearing and bolt on to my engine.

        da source!

There's been a tonne of discussions about this. First off, converting to 5-lug on a 4-lug is possible. Keeping the small axle is more difficult. I'd start out by reading about this on motorgeek.com and audiworld.com. There is allot to read and there is unfortunantly quite allot of misunderstandings too.

Anyway. Retaining 75mm bearings and going 5-lug is possible by using A4 front hubs, rear S2 Coupe hubs. Now, you use rear hubs on your cars front end that is. Problem is that you won't get the added track of the S2 since the hubs are narrower. This will get you into trouble as it might limit your choice of brakediscs. Then again, depending on what you are planning to use, it might be possible anyway. I know that some guys over on MG did this using the stock B4 discs redrilled - I'm guessing your after bigger brakes. There is always a solution - for instance, look into the dimensions of A4 discs and A6, A8 etc. You might find something there with correct hat height.

My best bet would be Audi A4 - there is quite a large list of items you can use on MG.. Don't have the link here (at work!) but if you can't find it let me know and I'll post it.

Read your post again. One possibility is to use your stock 01A gearbox but with 5-speed S2 stubaxles - that way you can use S2 driveshafts. I think there's also a possibility to use FWD 2.6 or 2.8 driveshafts but that's not possible to see in ETKA!

Theres no need to retain 75mm bearings, I do have S2 ones... Also I have 944 Turbo S calipers(early RS2) and A8 Zimmermann discs. So only way to go is new driveshafts. Henka you say that 2.6/2.8 FWD front shafts- is there a difference between FWD and 4WD shafts And is there a diff between S2 and 2.6/2.8 shafts... Anyway I'm getting tomorrow 2.6 shafts and then i'm smarter again. Hopefully.

The problem with Motorgeek is, that theres too much information and finding the correct info means hours and hours on reading I just dont have that time.

            Hmm

Well... 2.8FWD has got large (really big! bigger than normal "large"!) 130mm tripod inner joints and large outers. 2.3FWD has got large inners and small outers. 2.6 might have correct inners and outers - however, I do not know for a fact that FWD axles are the correct length.

As for 4wd cars, all 01A equipped cars have small inners, except S2 that has large inners. 6-speed cars all have large inners. 5-speed and 6-speed axles are the same on S2 - at least according to some. I haven't seen any proof either way really.

FWD axles do fit according to Newt and others on MG - they have succesfully used 2.3 FWD NG axles with 01E in a B3 - same as B4 in this case. It takes some thinking though. I seem to remember reading about you having to use the left axle on theright side or something... If you meassure the axles and compare them to yours you should get it right. Also, the joints can be pulled apart or pushed togheter so it doesn't matter if it's a question of a couple of 10-15mm wrong or so.

Well, if you get the length right, swapping the inner stubs is no biggie. Remember you can use almost any inner stub, FWD and 4WD, so you have a wide array of stubs to choose from.

You are going to have to do something about the inner-stubs that's for sure. I believe that S2 5speed stubs is what you are after - that way you can use large inners, large outers and your 82mm bearings houses. So, you need to find shafts that fit! 2.6 might be a very good start!

okay ill try my first post here.
ive got a 93 2.8 acoq and how hard is it to convert the lugs from 4 to 5. what are the differences between the v6 and s2 ?

the left driveshaft partnumbers for the 3b and aby engine is 8A0 407 271 AC and 8A0 407 451 GX.
while the part nr for the same side is 8A0 407 271 AH and 8A0 407 451 HX.

dont know why there are listed two different left driveshafts for each engine though.

the partnrs are almost identical. what could be the difference ?

btw, if the 5bolt conversion fails. any idea to what kind of discs to use with the 4bolt pattern ? just bought 996 calipers front and rear. focus rs discs? ? any thoughts on that ?
