Sounds like you have the wrong discs fitted. Regardless of the diameter or width, clearly the disc should be centered on the hub. Either that or your hubs have been modified.
What is the history on the car? What brakes were fitted before? Who supplied the discs? Etc.

More information and better description of the issue is required - pictures tell a 1000 words

Everything on the car was stock when i got it (aby s2 coupe), so i would imagine the hubs are factory ones. I bought the brakes of a reputable forum member. Cant get pictures at the moment unfortunately.

          I agree with Error...

It sounds like your disc center-bore is loose (radially) on the hub and is perhaps only being centered by the wheel studs, a job they cannot properly do. The disc needs that hub shoulder on which it fits onto, in good contact (should be a nice snug fit) with the disc's center-bore surface to leverage against when the brakes are applied, or else the disc will get pulled to the limit of it's stud clearance holes (depending on wheel nut tightening torque and technique) and hit the underside of the caliper bridge like you describe.

I understand that there are different versions of the required disc for this conversion. If none of the parts have been altered (particularly the hubs), is it possible that these particular discs are just made with a centre-bore too large?

When you back up and apply the brake, you are causing the disc to be pulled back to where it was, sort of. Likely it overshoots the original position. New position, slightly different noise or briefly (because the disc is still not really fixed radially) no noise.

            Thats what my thoughts were
Can you confirm this is the right oe number (4D0-615-301A) for discs?

            Appreciate your help.

              Tango,

I cannot confirm the P/N, best get on to someone who has done this mod successfully (there must be a few!) and compare notes. Suggestion, pictures seem to draw folks in. for instance, can you take the wheel off and show how the disc moves, where it rubs, etc.

              Cheers.

I buy off-the-shelf Brembo Mk1 A8 discs off eBay for between 30 and 50 quid each.
(The lowest I’ve paid for one disc was I think £29)

I thought you had to use the 314mm disks under standard 16"" avus wheels

Disc size will not change anything. Its the rs2 carrier which offsets the caliper.

sorted!! It was the nsf brake disc that had a high spot on it some how. Checked it on a wheel balancer lol. New set of discs fitted an all good.
Thanks to all for your help.

For information purposes. These are pictures of the 996 caliper, 323X30 rotor with RS2 caliper carriers. They fit under 16 inch Avus wheels. I put a light behind the wheels, so you could see the clearance.
