    Disc wear problems

    Brake guru's,

I have some problems with my disc wear (using 323mm A8/996 mono's). On both sides, the outside of the disc was fine but the insides were worn really uneven. The disc looked like a tree-trunk with all the 'ridge' lines and the pad had corresponding grooves in it. A real PITA as other than this, the discs had another 'round of pads left in them no probs.

I've now fitted new discs and pads, the difference is incredible (I have proper brakes again!) but after just 100 miles I can already feel a bit of a ridge on the disc, this time the outside driver-side. I'm bemused, can't see what would cause this other than a defect in the pads or discs, anyone got any thoughts?

    Cheers

How free are the pistons within the Porker's? May be worth a serious rebleed and flush also.

I did have a quick check of the pistons, they all seemed OK (ie didn't take too much effort to push them back)... I'll be keeping an eye, and if it starts to re-occur like I suspect, then I'll be looking at performance pads (never had issues with textar before though, other than the huge amounts of dust!) and get the discs machined.

Other than stones between the pad/disc surface, or a serious issue with the pad compound, can't see what could cause this! Incorrect torque or a little vibration due to slightly outta balance wheels couldn't affect this could they?? Could this be used as an excuse to get the car in for some 'work' earlier than anticipated? :mischeif:

Heh... someone's gotta take the blame! It's not my fault now... And you did respond when I summoned a 'brake guru', thats taking responsibility methinks

Actually I found the issue with the 'ring' on the new disc, it's the top metal 'pin' that holds the pad in place, has made slight contact leaving a scoring mark on the disc I've had the wheel off, re-tightened the caliper to the carrier, re-torqued the wheel lugs and it's still very close but I don't think there is contact. Perhaps I should file this pin down a little

I'd grind that pin back a bit, you want a decent bit of clearance, things do flex a little and get hot too.. Or can you push the pin back? You can on the 996s apparently, I did mine with an angle grinder though.

sorry to dig up an old thread. but I'm having the same problems.

both inside faces of the front discs are worn more than the outside.

                    I have 314mm with 996.

Have you filed down the pins (or pushed them back) enough ?

nope, i've never touched them. It's the first time i've touched the brakes since I've bought it.

It's not that they're scored, they're unevenly wearing but evenly on both sides of the car, even. if ya get what I mean?!?
