    Porsche brakes at last

Well, finally got round to fitting my Porsche big brake conversion today, hooray!

    Fitted -
Porsche 968CS/RS2 4-pot calipers (black colour)
    RS2 brackets
    RS2 bolts
304x30 discs (stock Audi A8 machined down to 304)
    EBC Reds
    DOT5.1 fluid

I have to say it was pretty straightforward the whole way along: old discs came off with out a fight, the splash guards didn't seem to get in the way, so I left those on, although it does look like there isn't much clearance...

Used the Gunsons Eazibleed tool to bleed/replace the brake fluid - what a fantastic piece of kit that is, brilliant. Made the fluid change operation a cinch.

Got a few random creaks and rattles up front though, I'm wondering if perhaps the splash guard is rubbing/vibrating? Will keep a close eye on that, might have to just remove them?

Will potter around for a few hundred ks to bed it all in, then will start to use them in anger! Brake pedal seems to need a firmer push than before to get initial braking, but pedal feel is better.

I'll try and take a snap or two with a digicam tomorrow and post here.

Did notice a split CV boot on the front left which definitely wasn't there 2 weekends ago, boo. Gonna have to fix that asap.

So, that's it then for me and mods, all finished

oh, except perhaps an induction cone air jobbie...

Yes I have to agree, once you improve the brakes (and handling) you will want to take them to the limit, which will mean more mods!!!

I think my next mod will be to fix the radio reception!

Here's a shoddy "cameraphone" picture of the brakes

This is another pretty low quality shot - these camera phones are complete toilet, oh well.

All looks much more respectable. 17" RS2 replica wheel hanging off the H&R/Koni kit, and a proper set of discs/calipers. What you can't see is all the CV joint grease splathered all around the inside of the wheel, but never mind...

Your coupe is an interesting orange colour, a mate of mine has an allegro estate in his barn that colour. I think they called it Blaze, that was in the days of Raleigh Choppers ( I had an orange one), Bay City Rollers and Paisley underpants. Mind you Michell Mouton was in her teens, Porsche were making the 911. Both of which grew up to be useful to Audi. A great rally driver and Great brakes.

Phew, didn't hijack the link, I managed to save it in time......

And they say the camera never lies! That's meant to be a dark red colour!

                  Dan,

The telephone never lies is not a phrase I've heard.

You mentioned that you have had to press the pedal a bit more firmly when stopping. I feel this is because of the hard compound that you have on your pads, I will be getting standard Porsche pads or EBC green stuff pads. front and back.

You made no mention of the Paisley undies!

What do you know of my Paisley pant preference?!

I think you're right - I've read that EBC Reds (I have them on the back too) lack a bit of initial bite from from cold. I'm sure I'll burn through them pretty quickly though and maybe try something else?

I was warned off EBC Greens up front for the S2 though - elsewhere in the forum, and also from EBC themselves. I guess it depends on what sort of driving you're going to be using them for in the majority of cases?

                      Nasty noises now

Ok. I did the "double pump" pedal test and the 2nd pump was much better bite-wise, so I guess there was some air in the brake system.

Got the Eazibleed out and bled the outside caliper nipples, with the wheels still on. Took about 10mins. Out came a long stream of little bubbles...

So, pedal feel and bite now vastly improved! Haven't really stamped on them yet to feel the full power, still bedding in, but definitely there's more brake force there...

What I am worried about now is a nasty set of noises. There's an almost metallic-sounding rubbing noise that comes and goes, and then at about 30mph a sort of harmonic vibration, which again comes and goes - this one you can feel through the pedals and steering wheel . The car sounds like a taxi. :eek2:

I get the feeling this might be the splash guards fouling the inside of the disc as there is good clearance all round the disc and caliper otherwise. What do people think? Anyone else had this problem? Is removing the splash guard going to do any harm? Can I do that without having to take the discs and calipers back off?

The other thing I noticed is that the road wheel bolts now seem a little short: with the newer disc bell being so much thicker the bolts hardly seem to grip the hub. Anybody else found this, are there longer bolts available? Don't want my wheels falling off.

                        Dan,
don't be tempted by the dark side, you know you want to 'FEEL THE FORCE'

Let the pads bed in and then you will know what it's all about.

Check the wheel bearings and see if there is any play, disk to back plate contact etc. Alistair C had problems with internalwheel clearance and was concerned that the pins in the caliper were tooooooo close to the disk and so filed them down. see 996 calipers?

                        D.

There's loads of clearance around the inside of the wheel between the wheel and caliper/disc, so it's certainly ok there (could have gone bigger!!).

Disc alignment through the caliper looks spot on too, so I don't think there's a problem there.

I'm convinced it's the splashguard, will get it up on a ramp and have a looksie. I did recall that someone said they'd removed their splashguard coz of clearance issues, wish I'd done that at the time now.

                            No More Mods. Honest.
A K&N cone doesn't count as a mod really does it?

                              Problem solved

So, took the car to a "local mechanic" this lunchtime - got it up on the ramp and for sure, the splash guards were the problem. Ever-so-slightly tight, and when things heat up under there, it all starts rubbing.

Took them off, problem solved. Bloody splash guards! Should have taken the bloody things off the first time round

Took the opportunity to have another little bleed on the fluid, a few big bubbles popped out - pedal feel now 100% improved over how it was, that was definitely the problem there. Rock solid pedal now with much firmer initial bite.

                              Porsche brakes rock!
