  • Handbrake Cable Length

    Fellas...

I need some advice on the length of the Avant handbrake cable versus the Coupe version. It would seem to be longer as it goes to the rear of the hub for a "vertical" pull of the caliper, whereas the Coupe version routes in front of the hub for a "horizontal" pull of the caliper.

I appreciate that other things on the cable may be vastly different to the Coupe for heat shielding and so on but I'm looking for a solution for a separate handbrake caliper mounted at the rear of the hub on a Coupe (with a 996 rear caliper up front).....more to report later!

    Any help gratefully received.

    Cheers

    • Whatever you find here or somewhere else, please post it in detail here since I'm curious about the same. Cable length is the final piece of my puzzle and I would like something that fits bolt on but that is 10cm longer then CoupĂ© original.

      Cheers

      • Cable

        Hi Neo,

Love the Team Irry website...very wacky (bit like me!)

Anyway...hope to have an Avant cable in my hands in the next couple of weeks.......so will let you know how much length we have to play with. I'm aiming for 996 rear calipers with a separate Brembo handbrake caliper...... But that'd be telling......no i will write it all up when it works

        Cheers,

            • 996 rear caliper and Brembo handbrake caliper

Well....I got the Avant handbrake cable (thanks andyg plym) and have modified it to fit. I have taken 100mm of cable outer sheath from the standard Avant cable, leaving the cable untouched, in order to expose enough cable to run round the pulley wheel. So here is the result on my Coupe: -

I daresay the same solution can be sorted for the Avant.

What is the bracket arrangement going behind the disc then?

                • I have an adaptor from VRS Northampton to Porsche 996 monoblocs 996 352 421 11 and
                  996 352 422 11 (painted red by GT500 )

The disc is from the neu S4 300x22

The handbrake caliper is AP Racing (owned and made by Brembo) using a custom adaptor of my own design mounted directly to the hub assembly using two of the holes (enlarged) from the splash guard.

                  • Goodridge hose for 996 rear caliper on Coupe

Oh and the hose is a Goodridge part ZZHV0440-001C (bespoke build from Vagparts old catalogue - RIP!) but this works just fine with a male-male adaptor straight into the caliper.

                    • hi there, nice job, but which caliper do u got at the front and does the balance in stoping power feels right with such huge brakes at the rear ?

thanks for info, as i got a spare 996 to fit also at the rear but for an avant, would that fit too with the handbrake caliper from Brembo ?

                      • great brakes ! now i know how bambridge was talking about he makes some good stuff

on my original question is it ONLY the S4 that runs the correct carrier ? i know brake upgrades are expensive but jesus ÂŁ90 + vat per carrier ?? stealers are having a laugh with this one

also will a 2004 cabrio S4 v8 which i belive is B6 be running this carrier?

                        • I think S4 Saloon/Avant and Cabrio all run the same rear brake set up. Try cross reference the part numbers.

I would like to adapt this to the rs2 but the hub is different.

                              • one more question about the handbrake cables:
I finished the conversion this weekend and everything fits like it should.
but I am not sure about the end of the handbrake cables, linked to the lever on the caliper.

is this the right position, or have I done it wrong? the fit of the cable is so lax.
how did you manage this? or I am just to confused to do it right?
