Anyone used EBC for brakes?

currently running Black Diamond 12 groove and EBC redstuff on the front of my S2. Great stopping power when warm, lousy and dangerous when cold. Only other issue i have with them is they are very noisy when stopping from speed, you get a drone throught the car.Comment

I'm sorry to say you get that with grooved discs not so bad drilled but still there all the sameComment

Russ, if you're planning to invest ~£600 in your brakes, I would seriously recommend you think again about the route you're taking. Patent rear discs and pads you can get dirt cheap. There is very little gain to be had by fiddling with different disc and pad combinations on the rear brakes. Fit these yourself, it's straight forward enough.
As mentioned above, save your money for a proper front brake upgrade - this means getting improved braking through the only tried and tested methods that make a difference, which is
1. bigger diameter and thickness on front discs
2. bigger front calipers with more pistons
3. better pads in the front calipers.
The tried and tested route has been discussed here many times, but revolves around stock Audi a8 discs, sourcing some 2nd hand Porsche / Brembo calipers, some custom brackets and depending on your budgets, FerodoDS2500 pads. Bob is then very much your mother's aunt!

What would this lot cost?
Lack of knowledge on my part means I would prob end up buying the worng calipers etc, plus my brakes are totally shagged, you can feel it through the brake pedal, not long till they stop working I suspectComment

Dont rate EBC, the green***** are no differenent to stock pads IMO. I never found aftermarket disks make any difference, if anything they cause more problems with warping and cracking.
Best option on a budget are new stock disks and decent pads, to do it properly get a set of Porsche brakes on there. It may cost a little more but you get so much more.91CQ20v - Gone to a new home

If I was given a full set of EBC free, I wouldnt fit them!
When I bought my Cossie it had some on, and they warped.
When I bought my Cav Turbo it had some on, and they warped too.....
As for Black Diamond, I replaced the EBC with drilled and grooved with BD Preditor pads, they were ok, but nothing special.
It didnt take much to get serious fade... there is a B road near me which gives a 5 mile run with alot of fast corners, if I drove that really hard it was easy to cook them bigtimeComment

When I bought my current S2, it had black diamond grooved and drilled discs, with red stuff pads.
They were pretty pants when cold, ok-ish when wet and not to bad (for standard S2 brakes) when hot.
I used to get a LOT of noise from them though. Don't know if that was the pads making it, or the discs.
Once I'd got used to car and could push it a little further, then they were just down right dangerous, even changing everything back to OEM and changing fluid.
Then the 996 mono's went on and they rock, and still do 2 years later.
I'd have to be driving the car like an absolute lunatic to want anything bigger ATM.

@Russ - if you shop around I reckon you could probably do it all for not far off the same budget as you were thinking of spending (although the FerodoDS2500 pads would probably push you over the edge...). Do some thorough research on the forum for brake upgrade threads, of which there are many. Some people on here offer full packages, or you could try and source bits separately (e.g. calipers off ebay, Seat Cupra caliper carriers, A8 discs from GSF etc.)
Spend in haste, regret at your leisure, as someone wise probably said once.Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

@ Dan, it's an S4 twin turbo so those parts won't work, but I'm sure there are similar options that will.@Russ - if you shop around I reckon you could probably do it all for not far off the same budget as you were thinking of spending (although the FerodoDS2500 pads would probably push you over the edge...). @ Russ, you definately need to speak to someone like Corey to find out what's possible. He's on this forum so send him a PM. As for standard rear brakes costing £180
I think you need to talk to Vagparts or even GSF or Eurocarparts! I can't see them costing much more than a ton!

Prob here is that I currently consider the car border line dangerous to drive so new
everything is a must.
It may cost me my remap but maybe I need to up my budget, my knowledge (and to a certain extent no amount of reading here or other forums will help) is limited, so think I need a be all and end all package to get me out of the ****, or rather keep me from landing in the **** in the 1st place!Comment

Genuine pads and discs all round are only £401.80 inc VAT retail. Depending who you know at the stealer and how friendly they are you could save a wedge off that too. You shouldn't struggle to get them for £300 depending how good you are at blagging.
Upgrade wise the RS6 setup seems to be favourite in the B5 world. It wouldn't fall into you current budget but may be something to think about. Your looking at £2000 retail for an RS6 front setup with stock rear pads and discs. Again you could probably get this down to £1400-1500 with a bit of haggling.

As it stands at the mo I can get genuine Audi discs and pads all round for approx £270 due to a healthy discount.
Also been offered grooved discs all round and redstuff pads, is £463 plus post. (make of discs to follow)
Just been to German and Swedish and I can get vented Brembo discs front and rear, for £200 (plus my mate says he can get a bit of discount on that), which would then leave me open to source the pads myself.
Downside of the grooved discs is that they may be a little noisy (?) and i'm presuming the Brembo will be a better disc than the standard Audi unit?
Oh the options!!Comment
