    Brake options with Mov'it calipers

After a couple of recent episodes (links to other threads) with my brakes, I need to make changes to get the reliability up and the cost (overall) down.

I've currently got the Mov'it setup (link to example). These (if I remember correctly) are a 993TT caliper mounted using a custom (?) Mov'it carrier, with 993TT discs on a custom Mov'it bell.

It's fair to say that while the stopping power is good, it ain't the cheapest setup in the world to maintain. I know that the nice Mr. Corey can do a (much!) better deal on replacement discs and pads than Mov'it's UK distributor, but am wondering if there are even cheaper things that can be done.

    So the questions...
    • keeping the calipers and carriers the way they are, can different (and cheaper) discs be used?
    • keeping the calipers but changing to different carriers (as a one off cost), can different (and cheaper) discs be used?
    • any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

    Ck.

I don't know about the power boat, but yes as Mov'it's UK distributor he ain't the cheapest, and since I'm interested in reducing the running costs of my brake setup, this almost certainly has to involved reducing (or eliminating) the use of his services in some way. Hence the questions, which were about possible ways to do this:
        • keeping the calipers and carriers the way they are, can different (and cheaper) discs be used?
        • keeping the calipers but changing to different carriers (as a one off cost), can different (and cheaper) discs be used?

This is becoming kinda urgent now... I've got an option on a track day and I'd like to be able to attend rather than having no choice but to say no because my brakes aren't sorted. Any help much appreciated.

        Cheers Ck.

Cheapest solution is to stick the stuff on ebay and go for the more cost effective 996-323 upgrade.

Corey I was under the impression that your 323 disc and bell would be a direct replacement / swap for the Movit one's. Is that not true?

If you go with a disc and bell option you can have whatever you want.
If you want the cheapest option you have to have the hat height that is on the A8 disc.

                Ok thanks guys

Corey... is the 996-323 upgrade you mention the 996 calipers with RS2 carriers and A8 discs that is popular in other threads?

Bry... I guess custom carriers would allow me to keep the existing calipers but use A8 discs, but (roughly) how much are custom carriers to have made?

                Cheers,

                Ck.

996-323 is with SEAT carriers or RS2 items with A8 discs.

Custom carriers are £125+VAT for the pair and about 4 weeks turnaround.

If your calipers are in good condition, without any backing plate corrosion, then it might be worth trying the A8 323x30 discs. I compared a set of Movit carriers to the RS bracket and they were dimensionally similiar. The main difference being that the Movit ones are very nicely machined rather than cast!
Two potential problems. One is that you probably have to space the carrier bracket out to re-centre the caliper over the slightly narrower disc as effectively the disc is repositioned further inboard. Just need to get a selection of washers 1-2mm together. The other is that the pads will have less material on them than ideal if you go for 993 pads. Not a problem, just need to keep your eye on the wear. The S8 uses a similar caliper and 30mm discs. As 993 pads fit the S8 caliper then I would think the opposite applies. Obviously you might be more concerned over the type of pad material than how much it wears!
