Do I need spacer with 996 monoblocks + RS2 brackets?

    Hi,

Reading through some threads, and now iam getting a bit confused.

    I got the 996 monoblock calipers, RS2 brackets, S8 323x30 disc.

Well I thought I only had to machine down the pins 1mm.

But in some threads, people talk about using a 4 mm spacer? Is this nessary, when Iam running a 17" rim?

    Cheers

How should this caliper spacer look like? Are we talking a small washer that is 4mm thick or what? A drawing would be nice.

I believe that Paul is refering to the use of 996 claipers and 323 rotors with the original 16 inch Avus rims.

If you are running a 17 inch rim or larger without much lip, you don't need any spacing. It is a direct bolt up.

These are the pieces needed for upgrading a coupe from brake system to use Porsche 996 brakes. This model caliper comes on two different cars, the Porsche 996 or the Boxster S. The 996 brakes are black and the Boxster S brakes are red. It seems that you can get these calipers in silver...

NOPE - you'll need a 4.0 - 4.5mm spacer/washer between the mounting face of RS2 carrier where it attaches to monoblock caliper to give you sufficient clearance between that 323x30 disc and the caliper.

This will NOT fit under 16" Avus, but will have no problems with 17" or larger.

A 996 caliper with RS2 bracket used on a 314mm disc positions the pads too far out. They overhang the edge of the disc. I don't know how much by as I haven't measured it.
The SEAT bracket is a far better solution for either disc choice.

Bry: I going down the RS2 carriers route with 323x30 zimmerman or brembo disc. Was cheaper for me to get the RS2 carriers since I dont know anybody that can do the machining of the brackets.

                Paul,
As my write up shows, I am running no spacers on that setup. I am running Aby hub carriers, not converted coupe hub carriers. These pictures show no spacers are needed to mount up this setup.

Started off with this setup; 996 caliper with RS2 bracket using a 314mm disc, the pads sat too far out, approx 1.8-2mm.

I then switched to; 996 caliper with RS2 bracket using a 323mm disc the pads sat
closer to the centre of hub, also bent the centre of spring plate above the pads to give abit more clearance, drove with this setup for 6 months no other problems,

I have now a 1.2mm shim between 996 caliper with RS2 bracket to locate the pads further out to the edge of the disk, so now my pads sit inboard about 1.4mm from the outside edge (circumfrence)of disk. i have cheched the closes point of contact between disc and caliper and have about 3.5-4mm of clearance
I have run this set up over 2 years with no problems
                  Dez

Never did overtime until i purchased........s2
