Cheers guys, that all makes sense

What i dont quite understand though is why the disc has to be cut down from 300mm to 280mm for the coupe. Is this a handbrake related issue also?

The offset is negative, so it would make it equivalent ET25 i.e. VERY close, probably to close to the arch.

if you could source a carrier that would allow 300mm discs and hold a caliper with the correct cable attachment it could all work, could look outside the audi parts bin and try any and every manufacture under the sun but specification for carriers and stuff very hard to find so you would have to buy lots parts to try out and sell on f they didnt fit.

for example there maybe on some model of car out there the 8e0 caliper but instead of the avant style cable connection it has coupe, then youd be able use same carrier as used on the avant, but heavens knows where to find it.
or a carrier that would mount a rr/urs4 caliper far enough out for a 300mm disc
suppose if were good friends with a large scrap yard owner youd be lit

Got you - so the 300mm disc needs to be machined down to 280mm because the caliper that is required to fit the cope can only ake a 280mm disc.

Check this post from Pete the Reeve - bite his hand off - great price on a kit for your Coupe...

All you need is some washers and get the discs spun down to 280mm diameter - maybe a tenner at your local machine shop.

To be more correct - its the CARRIER that determines the disc diameter. When you take the wheel off and have a good look at how things line up then all will become clear.

Whilst the caliper determines how wide/thick a disc it can cater for... The RR/S4 rear caliper was originally designed for 20mm thick discs but there is plenty of margin for running 22mm. I have had this setup for more than 2yrs without any issues whatsoever.

That looks like a winner, if the disc machining is a problem then get a spare set done at the same time, so you have them handy when they need changing in about 5 years time... if they wear as slowly as stock items that is.

Getting back to AVant / Sedan - there was a thread about using B5 (yes Bee five) rears on the avant as a means to get them up to vented spec - without high price of those B7 (8E0) calipers and carriers... If that is suitably bolt-on kit then I suspect our Mr Reeve could source the required bits at equally attractive prices.

Oh and just to say - with all this talk of brake upgrades, I HATE it that I sold the kit Paul sent to me...

On a plus, much needed funds at the time made it possible to keep the Avant... will Pete do a kit for the rear conversion some time?

As to Pete - we'd only have to supply the parts list and then its up to him how he wants to play it - will come down to demand I suppose... which might be related to how easy such a vented rear B5 bolt-on would be on the Avant / Sedan.

I asked Pete about a price for the entire kit and im pretty happy with it, looks like i'll be going ahead.

If you built a custom carrier and sourced different pads could you run with the 300mm discs then?

Uhhhhhh - in theory thats an idea, but you'd need to have a carrier that works with something like that RR caliper on the Coupe for nice handbrake integration, but the challenge would be finding pads that worked in that form factor... Using the ones from 280mm A8/S8 won't give you full sweep of the disc - though they would provide greater stopping force by nature of being further out from the centre.

Note - the armored A8/S8 has something like a 310mm rear brake option - that MIGHT be a pad that is compatible, but you'd be into new territory and the gain is going to be pretty small... Other than I know its cool to just boltup that 300mm disc without mods - it seems painful to cut it down to 280mm.

You'll need an expert brake parts man to check the pad options - or you just starting buying and trying. Nothin ventured, nothin gained....

wont matter if all the disc isnt sweeped since the friction is function of the pressure and not the area.
increasing the area will help prevent fade of the brake material

it wouldent be outside the realms of possibility to use a carrier for say the 256 system with a machined spacer, since that would allowed you about 40 mm between the centers of your bolts, would b as simple as a flat piece of steel with four holes in it, and you could machine it to allow for any off setting needed to be done

hum mac doesnt have anything like paint so i cant draw a lame picture to show what i meen

Agreed on your pressure point Goodall - its just that discs look a bit twee with a large unswept area.

Not sure I understand your machined spacer on a 256 carrier though... Does need a picture !

just noticed these on 034, should bolt to a coupe http://www.034motorsport.com/product...oducts_id=1146
thats what i was thinking about, urs4 caliper and a carrier of s4 a4 or bora or anything uses 256 vented rears, could use the a8 carrier and have 324mm rears, or make your own brackets can the skys the limit
