S2 rear caliper strip down question?

Spring must have awakened something in me and Time has come to get my coupe back on the road.

4 years ago I stripped down the standard rear calipers to re-build them. I can't seem to get the screw thread out of the bottom of the caliper and the lever doesn't move the screw thread. Down the bottom of the caliper ( below the piston) is a metal plate which has the screw in the middle. There are 2 holes either side and I can't revolve this plate.

    Does this plate come out?

    Yes its a circlip.
Squeeze together the two holes and it releases the cage thing at the bottom.

After you have stripped and cleaned the handbrake mechanism, getting it back together is fairly diffecult!
I use lock wire, you will see what I mean. once its circliped back in snip the wire and your done!
Hard to descibe without it in front of you....

        David:

You didn't say whether you already removed the circlip (item 17 here-
        http://www.20v.org/brakere.htm)

If you did and the threaded rod still doesn't want to come out of the caliper cylinder bore, soak it in a penetrating fluid and try moving the emergency brake lever on the caliper body to loosen it.

          Nice one!
Thats the spring in the cage I was remembering! hold the spring in the cage in the vice compressed and lock wire it so its under tension (must be a special tool originally!) as I said reassemble then snip the lock wire..

There's also a picture of the tools you can use to compress the piston spring while engaging the circlip.

PLEASE wear eye& face protection when doing this...

I`m re doing mine and need to change discs as the same time.

Only problem is that one of the allan head bolts that attach the calliper to the cradle is well and truly stuck and now has a knackered head re trying to remove.

              Ideas on bolt removal please.

              Thanks

Weld on a 10mm nut, the heat soak soon sets it free and you can get a 17mm socket on.
Or if you have no welding gear, Vice grips. not crappy halfords ones. Proper Vise Grip make ones.

Will have to try the vise grips but it is the top bolt so there is not too much room to get a good grip!

                  Any other ideas?

not sure where you could source these locally in the UK, but they are also the best and fastest way to remove a rounded oil drain bolt ( BTDT)

                            Paul:

They should not be that expensive...I recall buying a small set at the local Sears hardware (Sear's Craftsman version) called "Bolt-out" for about $20 USD.

They have come to be quite useful, more than once.
Given the effort and drama that a rounded oil drain bolt can cause, using a tool that can loosen a badly rounded bolt with less than a half turn is clearly worth the investment :-)
