I was doing the rear brakes on my 80V6Q sedan today... well that was the plan... I stupidly ordered the wrong height discs from ECP. On a FWD B4 they are 60mm deep whilst on the B4 quattro is is 40mm - I just clicked the wrong box by mistake... D'oh
This turned out to be a good thing as I got looking into some more options at the rear - safe in the knowledge that the rear of B4 shares so much with B5, B6, B7 including RS4 (hint hint).
The ideas below *MIGHT* work for the S2 avant and limo as bolt-on upgrades with its 5 x 112 configuration (they wont work for 4x108 hubs).
Anyway - to the plot... Looking at the B5 platform (1st generation Audi A4) I was able to see they share the same rear caliper topology (Girling/Lucas/ATE) - trailing the disc and with handbrake mechanism from the rear (not the side like on a B3 Coupe /UR/V8)
The 2000 A4 quattro (B5/8D) has a 256x22 rear disc - this is MUCH too deep for fitment on B4, but the caliper is of interest - 8D0 615 423C & 424C
The 2001 A4/S4 quattro (B6/8E) has the 300x22 rear disc that I posted about before (8E0 615 601R) - we know this bolts straight onto S2 avant/sedan using the B6 carriers (8E0 615 425B) and washers to correct a 3mm difference in disc depth.
The B6 caliper is the oddball looking thing from TRE that works withe 300x22 disc and carriers - the bolt spacing on the B6 caliper is bigger than B4/B5 and the pad fitment with these is a bit different too.
Splash shields from the B6/8E are nice and cheap to make a simple complete upgrade to rear of the S2 limo/avant. Only some minor mods are needed to make the handbrake sweet.
Looking at the B5 RS4 (2001-02) there is a 312x22 rear setup. This has expensive sides discs from quattro-gmbh and what appears to be a light alloy version of the B5 girling caliper - I say that as the seal kit is identical. If ordinary B5 calipers were sourced along with new RS4 carriers (8D0 615 425A) and aftermarket RS4 discs could be a nice way to go... If you want splash shields then you'll need to cough out some more cash.
I need someone with proper brake catalogs to check the depth of the RS4 disc (312x22) - if I'm right that it uses alloy version of ordinary B5 caliper then the disc should be same depth - unless the carrier places it somewhere strange.
Anyone here with good catalogs - or a B5-RS4 they can measure & photograph ?
