Two new ideas for S2 avant / limo rear brakes

I was doing the rear brakes on my 80V6Q sedan today... well that was the plan... I stupidly ordered the wrong height discs from ECP. On a FWD B4 they are 60mm deep whilst on the B4 quattro is is 40mm - I just clicked the wrong box by mistake... D'oh

This turned out to be a good thing as I got looking into some more options at the rear - safe in the knowledge that the rear of B4 shares so much with B5, B6, B7 including RS4 (hint hint).

The ideas below *MIGHT* work for the S2 avant and limo as bolt-on upgrades with its 5 x 112 configuration (they wont work for 4x108 hubs).

Anyway - to the plot... Looking at the B5 platform (1st generation Audi A4) I was able to see they share the same rear caliper topology (Girling/Lucas/ATE) - trailing the disc and with handbrake mechanism from the rear (not the side like on a B3 Coupe /UR/V8)

    The 2000 A4 quattro (B5/8D) has a 256x22 rear disc - this is MUCH too deep for fitment on B4, but the caliper is of interest - 8D0 615 423C & 424C

The 2001 A4/S4 quattro (B6/8E) has the 300x22 rear disc that I posted about before (8E0 615 601R) - we know this bolts straight onto S2 avant/sedan using the B6 carriers (8E0 615 425B) and washers to correct a 3mm difference in disc depth.

The B6 caliper is the oddball looking thing from TRE that works withe 300x22 disc and carriers - the bolt spacing on the B6 caliper is bigger than B4/B5 and the pad fitment with these is a bit different too.

Splash shields from the B6/8E are nice and cheap to make a simple complete upgrade to rear of the S2 limo/avant. Only some minor mods are needed to make the handbrake sweet.

Looking at the B5 RS4 (2001-02) there is a 312x22 rear setup. This has expensive sides discs from quattro-gmbh and what appears to be a light alloy version of the B5 girling caliper - I say that as the seal kit is identical. If ordinary B5 calipers were sourced along with new RS4 carriers (8D0 615 425A) and aftermarket RS4 discs could be a nice way to go... If you want splash shields then you'll need to cough out some more cash.

I need someone with proper brake catalogs to check the depth of the RS4 disc (312x22) - if I'm right that it uses alloy version of ordinary B5 caliper then the disc should be same depth - unless the carrier places it somewhere strange.

Anyone here with good catalogs - or a B5-RS4 they can measure & photograph ?

    Oh I didnt complete my train of thought... The other idea is to use the 280x22 carriers from A8/S8 (4D0 615 425C) with the B5Q calipers (8D0 615 423C & 424C) and spin the B6 discs (8E0 615 601R) down from 300mm to 280mm.

That should work fine with the A8/S8 pads for 280mm (1J0 698 451L). The splash shields from A8/S8 may even work as well (4D0 615 611F & 612F)

Howzat sound for a cheaper upgrade than the full blown 8E/B6 with its oddball and expensive TRE calipers ?

Considering i've got the A8 312mm by 25mm discs I think I might try making them work on my sedan with the A4 rear hubs. As far as close to RS4 rear calipers it sounds pretty close but i'm thinking maybe boxster calipers and front after market adapters mounted on the rear with some sort of aftermarket ebrake setup. Considering I've got the tilton proportional valve allready if they're too much for the rears I can adjust accordingly. I might even cheap out and do something kinda crazy first since i've got A4 front calipers and mount them on the rear and then find a ebrake setup and if that works figure out the complete boxster setup.

      Just figured i'd mention it.
I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got quattro?

There is also the 310x22 option on armoured A8/S8 which is interesting - pretty sure the disc depth/offset is all wrong for B4 though.

Sounds like you've been spending quite a bit of time measuring the rear end this weekend. did you manage to find a brake catalogue? I am at my dads garage in a weeks time so might be able to check then if you dont have any luck before.

A catalog would be fantastic - to see if there is any data on disc dimensions - and presumably pictures/dimensions of the various pads.

I am 99% sure the option in post #2 is going to work. The carriers are expensive whatever option you go for, but should be easiest & cheapest to source A4Q rear calipers.

                I just found this - http://www.brembo.com/ENG/catalogo_AM/2008/index.html

And there is a 280x22 disc for VW & SEAT applications (4 x 100) that is interesting (535 615 301). It is 0.5mm lower total height than B4Q which could easily be fixed with a small shim at the carrier. The centre hole would also need to be enlarged from 65mm to 68mm. This must be the 'Corrado G60' disc that I remember some of the stateside folk talking about as it could be adapted to either 4x108 or 5 x112.

As such this disc should be usable with minor mods for a 280mm vented conversion on the rear of B3 or B4 - with 4 or 5 bolt applications and the right carriers & calipers.

I have b5 RS4 rear brakes on my coupe - custom bracket is needed to offset the caliper bracket and for correct offset. Not a cheap upgrade unless you can source 2nd hand parts though - discs are only OE and 190 ish retail each.

That price pretty much rules out the B5-RS4 variant for mere mortals then !!!

Can you take any quick hat height measurements of the B5.RS4 disc ?

Did you try a B5.RS4 carrier on there ?

I think the cheapest rear brake upgrade is stock rear calipers with 302x12mm rear rotors. From 2007 audi A6 part # 4F0615601E Another 2007 caliper is 4F0615601F which is 330mm x 22mm

I found them via searching the ussual company's online I buy parts from here in the states. There is a thread on this forum about the orange S2 with the MTM parts that looks porsche Gt3ish. It's got the 302x12mm on the rears. U need to just make a custom bracket to space out the caliper.
