    S2 Front Brake upgrade confusion

    Hi all

I've read so much on front brake upgrades here and on S2central that I am totally confused... and some of the postings are a couple of years old and maybe out of date.

SO.... Is there a way to keep my 16 inch Avus wheels, and get a big improvement in braking, but NOT get into milling/grinding discs and /or calipers ?? Does using the Porscheb 996 calipers definately involve machining parts to adapt them?

    Please?

maybe try a different solution going for a ap or willwood solution.

issue is will you get the improvement without the bigger disc?

also being too close to the brakeis not a good idea BTDT. i had the 6 pots on with 17" rims. they cleared by next to nothing. when i removed the wheels the inside had scratches on them where stones had got stuck.

id go 17" with the 4 pots and 18" with 6 pots. id go 2 piece on any discs over the a8 ones used in the 4 pot.

i have 993 tt discs and gt2 6 pots with 18" bbs RC's and they work great. should do for the 3k or so that it costs oh plus the 400 quid for the 280mm rears. the joys of jaloppies with crap brakes

The only bolt-on option with 996 monoblocks I know of uses 314x30 discs from A8 and custom machined brackets. I cannot remember who supplies those brackets now.

Other options requiring machine ops involve modifying Seat Cupra brackets - which used to be dead cheap until 'the borg' realised they were a bit too popular.

No those are for RS4 calipers (very nice they are as well)

          Bambridge makes them or AndyP

If someone can post a photo or link of 314mm discs with these custom carriers and 996 under 16" Avus that would be cool - I've failed to find one here. Must be lurking somewhere. Its probably the option I'll end up with.

I previously bought RS2 carriers and 323mm discs to go under 18" wheels - until I started to despite the weight of those replica wheels - and that they are so common/overplayed.

I should probably sell them only weight for postage is the killer - maybe keep them for another car

This thread explains the problems with using the 16" Avus alloys.... Guess you may have already read it...

I think that unless you can machine the mounting bracket down they just won't fit the 16's....

I used the brackets from Kev (Bambridge) BUT I did go upto the 18" alloys...

It maybe worth dropping him a PM to see if he knows if they will fit under the Avus 16's or if he can machine a set down for you.... He has all the tackle!!!

See I remember a thread where the calipers and discs were machined down to get a nice fit with RS2 carriers under 16" Avus at around 308mm. Thats why I thought the custom 314mm brackets were right for 16" Avus but I could be wrong.

The RS2 ones could have been for the 323mm version actually, i seem to remember listing than as an option when i did my 996's under 18"'s

Jas11n will have a pic no doubt. For monos and 314 discs under Avus you need either custom or machine seat cupra brackets with IIRC 8mm taken off the caliper mounting face, and 4mm off the hub mounting face (The Cupra brackets are very over engineered so can take the reduced thickness - not sure RS2 carriers would be strong enough with a few mm taken off them )

You should be able to use 323s and RS2 brackets with some spacers as the Avus 16s are slightly tapered so you get more clearance

Kev has offered the brackets for £110 the pair - but from reading all the posts, you still have to machine down the A8 disc to keep the caliper away from the 16 inch wheel.

My trusty mechanic says the main benefit of brake upgrade is the bigger wheel diameter as this offers greater leverage..so he sees no point in taking a larger disc then making it smaller... he recommends the 18 inch wheels with big calipers option.

greater rotor diameter is only one part of the equations though... bigger discs have bigger friction surface area and also cool quicker, they heat up slower and dissipate heat better and also you are upgrading from to multi-pot fixed calipers from twin pot floating calipers which is a big improvement, so all have a factor.... pluys unspring weight is reduced
Big discs aren't the only thing to consider

                              Paul;

I also remember reading that thread.... back to square one thooo as you still need someone to machine down the disks....

Which also means its a blumming PITA when they need replacing.... But I also "guess" that you would still have to machine down the mounting brackets for the calipers... Double whammy!!

Didn't :corey: have a 16" conversion on his web site.... what parts did he use???

                              Sorry....
