    Brake Line renewal

    Hi,

So I going to the MOT end for March and my brake lines does not look to good.

I think there is three brake lines going from the rear to the front of the car, but can these be bought pre-bent or do I need to do this myself?

Also if someone has some part numbers that would be great.

I guess I need to bleed the bloody brakes again, but I'm getting used to that now

I would make them up yourself from cunifer (its cheap, nice and easy to work with and doesn't corrode up like the steel lines so should outlast the car).

If you don't have a flare tool then measure the length of the old line with a bit of string and get a garage to cut to length, slip on couplers and flare for you, then you can just go home and fit.

Might be worth looking at the clips that hold the pipes to the body to see you want some spares on hand.

    Hope that helps

Also depending on the condition of the old couplers be prepared to replace the next section of pipe etc

You can buy lengths of brake pipe from Audi - they are correct length and have the flares and onions fitted already... All you do is carefully bend to fit. And they weren't expensive when I bought them - probably 2yrs ago for my eternal project (that has yet to start properly) - still in boxes as new. There is a T-piece you need if you wish to avoid re-use old crusty looking pieces and I would invest in fresh clips as well. A quick look at the family album will show you what you need.

But also - a good flaring tool is not so expensive so don't rule that option out either.

There's only one brake line running from front to back. There is a connector at the front of the floor as the brake line runs down from the engine bay. There is a T fitting under the car at the side, roughly where the rear seat is, probably next to your battery being LHD. Lines run to each wheel arch from that T fitting.
So it could be a fairly easy job, depending on which part you need/want to replace.

I would swear that there where 3 brakes lines under the car going from front to rear, but maybe I'm confusing it with the fuel lines?

yup 3 fuel lines on the right and 1 brake line under the left hand side of the car. The T-piece is pretty expensive from audi but its made of brass so you dcan clean up your old one like new. Use Kunifer as suggested as it will last forever, cpmpared to the OEM ones.
Flaring, cutting and bending tools are not expensive and well worth the investment, if you have OCD like me you can spend ages getting the lines straight and bends perfect
You'll need to remove the exhaust heat shields at the very least to do the job, it will be fiddly with everything in place on the car.

The breather line runs from the tank outlet grommet to the carbon cannister so its a good time to delete it if you're replaceing the lines, save yourself at least 200g

For some reason the brake pipes on my car are kunifer with brass ends and have been from new, Only steel pipes are the 4 that porsche put on to the calipers and they have all needed to be changed already

Fuel Pipes, Different story, Rotten, I'm not sure it will be possible to change 1 as when you try to take it out from the rubber mounting other 2 will be rotten as well, If you buy the set as I did they come with all clips and new rubber bushes but you better be sitting down when you get the bill, £270 and they wanted another 600 to fit them at which point I and left, bunch of :corey:

Good luck its an easy job, Hope you got a good bleed kit

Going slightly off topic, if I remove the breather line then just vent tank to atmosphere? Can the carbon cannister then just be junked?

Going to be doing the fuel lines soon so might as well make life easy/make some space in the engine bay. (and save 200g)

yup. you just need to make sure you recirc the valve in the engine bay so you don't get a vacuum leak. if you remove the valve you get error codes and perhaps runnig issues i can;t remember. You can vent the tank through the vent flaps behind the RH boot carpet to come out behind the rear bumper, IIRC Terrybullwon had some good pics of this somewhere
