My Ferodo Ds2500 pads make a racket on the discs when I fade them into the floor. Admittedly, they don't fade unless you really mash 'em hard from 140 mph+ or a bit higher, but it shows that whatever brakes you got, you can kill 'em. (AP 6 pot, 355mm grooved discs, Ferodo Ds2500 pads) so HEY! Let's all be careful out there.

I find the pads make a lot of dust as well.

Mine are plain surfaced, no drilling or grooves. I can only think that perhaps we have different versions of the same pads - they are constantly tinkering with the formulations of pads, so maybe the ones I have produce less dust- they're all new pads from the last 6 months? Either that, or I don't brake hard enough, but I was giving it as much stick as I possibly could at the Northampton circuit and that was HARD on the cars!

Ferodo DS2500 on a disk with a few grooves in. You won't get much better and worth the extra cash.
Drilled disks are crap! Just done for show as it weakens the disk, reduces thermal mass and hence braking effectiveness and it makes the whole thermal problem worse for pads and fluids. Modern decent pads don't 'gas' so plain disks give you the best brake performancea and the addition of a few groves will help deglaze the pads if your driving style encourages glazing.

lee, i thought drilled brakes would help cooling ? why do all proper porsches/m3/big mercs have drilled discs ?

Drilled discs in theory helps with pad de-gassing, and supposedly increased cooling. In practice, well modern pads don't gas hardly at all, the increase in cooling is small, and depending on how the x-holes have been made (ie if they're drilled, not cast) they reduce the strength of the disc significantly.
                            They do, however, look "cool".

I have a friend who works now in the "thermal managment" dept at Jaguar: he spent alot of time working on brake setup development for various types. In their repeated brake fade tests, the x-drilled discs made almost no difference to the brake performance, and they're considerably more expensive from the suppliers, so his recommendation was that plain discs were the best. The Marketing dept won the arguement though, as they look "better", especially as, as you say, Porches, Mercs, Bimmers etc. all now run x-drilled discs on their up market models, so they stayed on the high-performance Jags purely for looks.

As Lee says, grooves can help with pad de-glazing, and also provide an easy visual guide to your disc wear - if your grooves have disappeared it's time to change the discs!

Agreed, Dan. You are on the right wavelength.

Casting the holes in does make them a bit stronger than drilled because of the material flow (grain direction in the material) around the holes reducing stress concentrations. However, anyone that has studied material science, stress, fatigue and other such subjects will tell you how much stress concentration you get around holes in any part subjected to forces. Holes are bad!

People are under the misconception that holes make them work better becasue they WERE necessary many years ago in motorsport to aid performance. Fortunately we can benefit from 30 years of material science improving pad design since those days.

David, go and have a look at vehicles like modern touring cars, F1 cars, Indy cars, Le Mans prototypes and tell me how many drilled disks you come across. I don't think you'll find any. They can't be wrong too.

People are victims of marketing hype. My new 362x36 disks only have 2 circular eccentric groves of about 330mm dismater in the surface. You don't need any more otherwise you will start affecting the way that pads and disks interact. Those 40 groove disks that are avilable for some vehicles are a complete waste of time/money IMHO as they will cause more issues than they solve. Car manufacturers are not interested in producing consumables with long lifetimes, that's where they make the most money. Also, how many of these high end jags, porsches and mercs do you think are driven to their capability envelopes? Only a very small percentage. CEOs, mana and other folk who buy these models are just after the most expensive and flashiest thing in the showroom. People are vain and want to show off their wealth in very obvious ways.

I am an engineer and I have a simple motto: 'to solve a problem first you must understand it'. My final year thesis in my degree was to design and manufacture a hybrid rocket engine where combustion temperatures reached 3500K+ and my ablative combustion chamber was made from polymethyl methacrylate (Perspex) without any metalic casings. I guess I understand a little bit about thermal management and material selection.

Case in point: The standard 360mm x 32mm RS4 front disks are to be replaced when the disk thickness becomes 30.4mm. That means that after you have worn only 0.8mm from each face of the disk it must be binned and replaced at £550 odd per pair.
