    Boxter S / 996 Calipers

I've just bought a complete set of Boxter S monobloc calipers (but I'll only be using the fronts). I've decided to go for EBC red stuff but when looking for pads, I've found there seem to be a number to choose from. Product codes appear to be different for the different variants of the 996 :-
    3.4 Carrera 2 same as 2.5 Boxter
3.4 Carrera 4 same as 2.7 Boxter and 3.2 Boxter
    3.6 Carrera 2 same as 3.6 GT3

Anyone have any experience of this.

If anyone needs measurements from the calipers, let me know as they are not yet fitted.

Will be looking for offers on the rears if anyone is interested.

    Alistair

I am also looking for a brake upgrade, I was surfing on www.design911.co.uk where I found some used brakes. halfway the page there is a sentence which i dont fully understand:

      SUSPENSION1 993 CALIPER LEFT FRONT C/2 approx YEAR 1995

Do they sell the brakes or the suspension?

      thanks,

      Erik

I can only speak from the experience I've seen myself...... but with the ferodo DS2500 pads fitted and the pistons pushed right into the caliper body..... the 30mm disk was a 'snug' fit. Absolutely no way I could have got a 32mm disk in there unless I'd ground the pads down accordingly.

Sure you're not thinking about 996tt calipers? They are designed for 32mm disks off the shelf and I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could open them out for 35mm disks...... ?

Alistair - sounds like that is a little mixed up! Without complicating this any further, I'll just quote Corey - who seems to have a better handle on this than most:

Boxster front (2.5/2.7) will suit a disc 25mm thick
Boxster S will suit a disc 28 - 30mm thick (if a 30mm disc is used you will need to machine the guide pins by 1mm)
          996 Carrera 2/4 (same as Boxster S)
993tt (waste of time as it is 2 piece)
996tt Disc width 32mm, but I believe would accomodate upto 36mm thick
GT3 front (the Holy Grail) beautiful 6 pots
GT3 rear same as 996 Carrera fronts

If it helps, when I bought the Ferodo DS2500 pads, the box listed them as being for the GT3 rears.....

Just one other thing Alistair - out of interest, can you measure the two sets of calipers - just to see how they vary...... Can you check the gaps in the middle (ie from caliper body to caliper body)

Don't worry they do sell the brakes that is just their ref. number.

996 fronts will JUST squeeze a 30mm disk in and they're meant for 28mm disks.
996 rears are meant for 24mm disks. Expecting to be able to open them out by 6mm is perhaps a bit optimistic.

Anyone here actually got a set of rears they could measure up ????

And don't forget, the rear calipers have much smaller pistons too.

Sounds like I'll wait for the 996 Carrera 2/4 (same as Boxster S) but I take it these won't fit behind the 16"?

                    Porsche Caliper Measurements

                    Very quick measurements last night.
                    Front
                    Between guide pins 30.5mm
Between two sides of body as per Alistair's photo but from the inner side 68mm
                    Rear
                    Between guide pins 27mm
Between two sides of body as per Alistair's photo but from the inner side 60mm

I guess from this you wouldn't have too much of a problem making the rears take a 28mm disc.

                    Hope this helps.

                    PS
                    Alistair
What caliper is that a picture of ? It appears to have only one guide pin per pad or is it just that it is not the full picture ?

Picture above was of my 996 Carrera 2 calipers - there are 2 pad guides on each side - it was just a close up to show how much of the guides I had to grind off to fit the 30mm disc.

You might find a good market for your rear calipers on the corrado forum (www.the-corrado.net) seeing as standard discs are only 22mm (on a G60) to begin with........ !

Just sorted out a set of 996 C2's in Black. I take it I just need A8 (1997 ish)vented disc's machined down to 304mm and all the brackets and stuff?

If these are fronts, you don't have to machine anything.

Front 996 brakes fit with a 323X30 A8 rotor using RS2 caliper carriers, period.

They won't fit under a 16" Avus wheel with that disc size. As indicated before they will just fit under there with the 314x30 A8 disc but clearance is less than ideal. (It was less than 1mm on Alistair C's) If you want to keep the OE Avus wheel it is probably advisable to reduce the disc size to ~308mm as most brake manufacturers recommend a working clearance of around 4mm IIRC.
                              Now RS2'less
