    Braking "power" with 993tt

    Hi everyone,

Last year I did upgrade from UFO to 993TT with 323*32mm discs and EBC redstuff pads and HEL braided lines. I did the bedding procedure and I have to say that fortunately they brake better than my old UFO's.
However, I do think that the braking power is not as hard as I expected it to be. Maybe I'm wrong to compare it to new braking systems but if I compare the braking of my big reds with the one I have on a simple ford mondeo (2.5tdi) or a simple ford fiesta, those brake better!

I mean in the newer cars I own when you push a little too hard on the pedal you get your head knocking the steering wheel as the braking is hard. I had the same thing when testing the A7 3.0tdi. you push a little to hard at low speed, the car stops instantaneously and you break your head on the steering wheel.

I really don't get the same feeling with my 993tt calipers. I have to apply a reasonable amount of pressure to feel the brake.

FYI : I did change the steering fluid and the brake fluid (ATE super blue). I don't have spongy feeling. The bomb, steering pump and master cylinder have the same mileage as the car (425000km)

So I was wondering if :
    It's normal ?
The pads/disk pair still needs more bedding?
Something is wrong in the braking circuit? can the bomb/steering pump/master cylinder influence this feeling?

    Many thanks for your answers!

    hugokx.

      Thanks Jamo,

I'll try this solution. I don't have budget for anything like DS2500 right now. The car is only used for street and highway right now. I can have DS2000 for my budget, do you think they could be "good" (not to compare with something like ds2500 of course) or should I take OEM pads?

      Regards.

        Hi,
I agree with the pads. I had Redstuff pads and they weren't very good and wore out very quickly. When I inquired to EBC if it was nomal that the pads only did 6000kms (normal driving and no circuit), I got no reply.

However the brakes on my RS2 are still 'spongy' compared with others but they do stop very well when pushed.
        I have OEM pads.

When I say poor choice in pads, redstuff is a track focused pad, they take a fair bit of heat in them before they work at a high level. DS2500 do have the same issue for about 5 minutes of driving

I'd leave them in until you can afford ds2500, there are other choices. I'm sure there is a mintex pad that is highly rated and another that I think Llloyd used

I have had Panamera calipers on my urs6.they did its job nicely with stock Pagids pads.
Presently,i have generic cayenne s calipers with ebc ultimax pads.when cold, you need to
give it some heat then it starts to bite.try bedding-in first.

A couple of things to remember:

              1. The UFO brake system was actually very good when everything was working well. So comparing them to Porsche Brembo calipers, etc. doesn't mean a night and day difference.

              2. Smaller cars with less mass are easier to stop. My wife's Toyota Yaris stops very easily but it is about 1/2 the weight of my C4 UrS4 but the brakes are not half the swept area.

              3. As others have said, pads do make a big difference. I once had Ferrodo pads in Mark 1 GTi calipers on my 1980 Jetta (with GTi vented rotors). There was almost no braking power until there was some heat in the pads.

                Hi URS4boy,

I actually have no idea of the stock behavior of the ufo's as the car has its miles. The old ones I had didn't stop really well and every stops on the highway was anticipated long before the obstacle. I know that lighter cars are easier to stop, that's why I was referring to A7 Tdi brakes.

I think I'm gonna buy a standard set of pads for street use just to have an idea of the difference.

Don't confuse servo assistance with brake efficiency, some french cars have so much servo assistance that a toe pressure is enough to stand the (flimsy cheap) car on its nose.
I use carbon metallic pads on my Avant and my god they work well!!! Down side is huge amounts of brake dust and rotors dont last for long.

i think you may have found the red stuff "character"

the basics of redstuff i have found on an pad smaller than a 6 pot pad are that they feel poor in response initially.

jamo is about right i feel. warm up and they will work. on the 6 pots the force and size make up for this lack of initial bite.

ebc have a not so good reputation i feel and its mainly due to the poor initial green stuff that every mag raved about. peeps fitted them and then had ruined discs due to the pads retaining too much heat and cooking a spot on the disc.

iirc reds were under 1/2 the cost od ds2500. now for me thats too much a difference to just be a brand pricnig thing. they gotta have something better.

the next time i use the 6 pots they will have ds2500 in them.
