    seized rear calipers

Fronts were a piece of p*ss - rears however, are not so simple... so need a bit of advice on how to proceed...

Bought new discs and pads to go on the rear of the diesel dog estate, and it appears that the rear caliper on the drivers side has seized into place, which is a right pain, but even more of a pain is that the caliper hanger is held in place with round bolts that are supposedly moved with an allen key, well, they would, but the slots have rounded and there doesnt appear to be any easy way to get the hangers off, which means I can't replace the discs.

    ideas anyone?

In the rounded bit hammer a slightly larger torx bit in as this will enable you to get it to turn.

Mine were rusted and rounded on the rear too, and I hardly ever have any luck with oversize torx, but I have a vice grips with the jaws ground down that gets me out of trouble in that situation.

Original Allen bolt is 8 or 10mm can't remember exactly now. If your going to hammer a torx bit in you want to be in the range of T40/45/50. And at a guess about a 13/14/15mm socket to hammer over the top of the Allen bolt..

Make sure you've got your gloves on, reduces the hammer rash..

thanks for the info on the Torx sizes, I dont for the life of me know why they didnt just put normal bolts on it, would have made much more sense in my eyes.

I also have a pair of vice grips so will likely give those a try as well. Just need to get a set of calipers now - might pre-emptively get a left one as well to be safe.

              cheers guys

I do not know if they are available in the EU, but a set of IRWIN bolt outs has save me more than once http://www.irwin.com/tools/browse/sc...extractors...a set is less than $30 USD. i have used them on the CV and driveshaft bolts with great success, not to mention the rounded off head on the oil pan drain bolts...

I was going to suggest these. My set have saved me hours that would otherwise have been spent hammering/heating/swearing/bleeding.

I have a set I'd be happy to send, but I assume this is more urgent than the Christmas postal service would allow?

                              Another thumbs up for these

Reguards the use of Cap head bolts, if ordinary bolts were used it would still be a pain to remove them years down the line (they would round off) The area they are located means they corrode quite quickly, what they should have done is fit a small rubber cap over the head of the bolt.
