996 calipers on my s2 are getting hot under normal driving.Had to remove pads on drivers and clean up and relube about a month ago on route to our hols.it got so hot made steering wheel vibrate had to pull over and remove. luckly found some leather builders gloves at roadside so i could strip down without waiting hours to cool down. When first bought s2 a couple of years ago it had brake humming issues when driving and stopped when braking, every few weeks after trying various products to stop noise, silicone with copper in is doing the trick holding shims to pads and no humming.I have been running new disks and pads since october and for the 3rd time i,ve had this over heatng prob in the last few weeks on the drivers side and this time its both sides .i wonder if i need to file down more of the edge of the metal backing plate which the pads slides on in the caliper but if i over do it humming may come back to haunt me .

Created a new thread for you
The copper gasket does a good job of securing the anti rattle shims, so that's all good.
When you took out the spring plate, was there much corrosion on it?
Are all the pistons retracting OK?
Another option is that the wheel bearings are getting old...Cheers'en, AndyC

Thanks for that squire
Wheel bearings have done 20,000 still no play, there isnt a spring plate on mine its a bit like figure of 8 retaining spring. theres a slight bit of corrosion under the stainless brake pad slider plates.large pistons move easily but smaller ones take a bit of moving.ive got motul 600 brake fluid to put in and aquired a brake bomb

If they've got stainless pad slider plates, they're not 996 calipers. You got any pictures? Thanks for that squire

I think that could be the problem ,i did try to undo allen bolt once but allen key started to slip so left it just wanted to clean up brake dust a bit more thoroughly but thats me being ott.Is it a good idea to remove slider plates to clean or is it going to cause more probs.allen bolts dont have much depth in them

i think you should strip them down and clean them up, check for corrosion and so on.
Don't use n allen key. Use a hammer to 'wake up' the bolts, then get a good sized breaker bar on them.SSComment

If you're talking about the small allen bolts that hold the slider plates in place, the best way to get them out is to weld a new bolt to the top of them, had to do this a few times and it's never failed.I think that could be the problem ,i did try to undo allen bolt once but allen key started to slip so left it just wanted to clean up brake dust a bit more thoroughly but thats me being ott.Is it a good idea to remove slider plates to clean or is it going to cause more probs.allen bolts dont have much depth in them

I originally posted that they might be 993s that had gone south but was told they were 996s...
