    Porsche brake upgrade

Firstly:- Sorry to add another thread on Porsche brakes but I'm hoping to distil the wealth of information into one thread for my own means.

I'm looking at putting Porsche callipers (undecided on type) behind the standard 16" Avus alloys running A8 discs.

Where are good places to look for secondhand callipers?
What sort of money am I looking at?
    What carriers are suitable?
Is machining the discs to 308mm dia. absolutely necessary or are there alternative discs that can be used?

Some links given to me by Jamo about the exact same modifications to his car:

Obviously from the sites above, a 996 caliper on an RS2 carrier will fit under the Avus 16s. We don't have many of those in the states, only came on the S6 here. But this is what I did with my brakes. You can use either the 314X30 or 323X30 A8 rotor, the clearance is needed for the caliper not the rotor.

    Greg

Write up and detailed pictures are found here.

These are the pieces needed for upgrading a coupe from brake system to use Porsche 996 brakes. This model caliper comes on two different cars, the Porsche 996 or the Boxster S. The 996 brakes are black and the Boxster S brakes are red. It seems that you can get these calipers in silver...

And this is the finished product. This is a 996 caliper with 323X30 A8 rotor.

They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.

Roughly with quotes from various people..

Calipers, 260 quid ebay ( try various spellings ;-)

          >>"the new 996s use a few calipers.

The ones we're on about here are p/n ......

          996.351.425.11 Left Front
996.351.426.11 Right Front (as far as I know the last 2 digits refer to the colour)

and are used on current model carrera 4 and carrera 2"

          A8
          Discs 28 each? GSF

          Pads £50 ish

Shims, Porsche dealer, (may come with calipers) £20-30

Brackets, custom from Martin js, You can use RS2 brackets, some have, may need machining to get clearance.

Hoses and pipes from VAG parts, Martyn.

          Other parts

          Bolts from Lee
          >>"Heres the bolts you need: M12 x 1.75 75mm long (for the caliper to bracket) .
M12 x 1.5mm 50mm long (Lee has these, you need to cut them down by 10mm) . all 12.9 high tensile.

BTW with martin's brackets I have not machined the discs and have no clearance issues, its tight but not too tight.

I found something on ebay.com, looks intersting also for me . It are a pair of big reds, for 495 dollar. But I can seem to find if they are front or rears.

              big reds

You cant tell on the shape of the caliper if they are front or rears? Someone(you ant?) indeed asked him the same questions. He gave the following answere:

Hi, Are the calipers front or rears? do they have any pat numbers on them? Do you know how much shipping to the U.K. would cost. Thanks Mark Answered on Dec-17-04
A: Neither I, nor my machinist can say if they are front or rear. The part numbers are not on them (I was told at Porsche that they come on a white sticker that is immediately removed prior to install)

Ah yeh i read that... its bull as its actually on the caliper itself... i cant find the link to the pic to show u, but its like embossed on to them, not something u can peel off, its actually part of the mould from the looks of it.

                      That make sense?

The numbers are on the caliper as part of the mould. First time the dismantler sent me the wrong ones. I could tell by the numbers on the calipers.

You should try LA Porche Dismantlers. I bought my blacks for 200USD there about 8 months ago. The reds are 300USD, premium because of the color. Interesting. The blacks are off the 996 and the reds are from the Boxster S. Mine were new enough that they didn't need a rebuild. With the exchange rate right now they should be a good buy, even with shipping. Besides, California doesn't have snow in the lowlands, no salt is used on the roads even in the mountains, and the sun is always out. You should be able to buy a clean set from them.
