    Seat caliper brackets

I need new discs on my slipperwagon and I'm currently weighing up the economics of doing the upgrade to Boxster S (or 996) calipers and A8 discs as opposed to new standard discs and redstuff pads.

There has been a few references in the archive that Seat RS caliper brackets are a cheaper caliper mounting solution than the 'proper' Audi RS2 brackets but I've been able to find posts that say they will fit and some that say they won't. I've also found posts that say they are £24 and some that say they are £95 each.

Can anybody say for definate whether these caliper brackets are suitable and at what cost (and part number) from the Seat dealers. If they are no good, or the £95 that has been quoted, then does anybody out there have the facilities to make up some mounts at a cheaper price than the RS2 ones?

Lastly. If I go ahead with the brake upgrade what sort of reception can I expect when I tell my insurers, Direct Line, about my shiny new brakes?

Calipers were deemed unsuitable due to them not being able to use thick enough discs... 30mm minimum is recommended and they cant take it.

The mounting brackets that they use i dnt think have ever been confirmed to work or not, i was interested to know also but am getting brackets with my brakes that i bought.

The RS2 mountings tho arent that much anymore tho, i think they are around £50 each.

Lastly, try asking ur insurer first, i would have expected it to go down due to increased stopping power but it will more than likely go up... work that one out... they probably see it as you will be going faster due to being able to stop faster Always look on the bright side eh

Ibiza cupra R calipers can take 30mm thick disc with just tiny modifications.

I used to be insured with Direct Line (I only changed because they wouldn't add my girlfriend onto the policy) and I declared my brakes.

There was no change whatsoever in the cost of the policy.

I'm not looking at using the Seat calipers, just the mounting brackets to use with some Porsche calipers.

Just had a look on VAGparts website and the RS2 mounts are 81.50 + vat for a pair. If the Seat mounts work and are £24 each then I'm £50 closer to making the Porsche/A8 conversion financially viable.

I've been casting around on those internet breaker net thingys and I've been offered a pair of 996 calipers off a Carrerra 2 for £330 inc vat & p+p. The only prob is that they are black and I'd really like red ones to match my laser red bodywork. Am I correct in saying that 996 calipers are black and Boxster S ones are red but apart from that they are the same?

heh - where did u find those black ones, i'd prefer black rather than red as mine is a pearl white and the red might just show off the calipers too much for me

The calipers are the same though, check the part numbers, they should end .425 &.426 for the left and right fronts

            Cheers

yes they are identical apart from the colour.

I see what ur saying now.... yeh AFAIK those brackets were never tested were they?? Would def work out a good option.

I just posted a parts request on find-a-part and breakeryard for a pair of Boxster S calipers, mainly to get an idea of what price they would be rather than to actually buy a pair. Within half an hour I had a phone call offering me the 996 calipers, the guy having figured out that I wanted them for a conversion. If they had been red I would have been very tempted.

There are about five or six of these free part finder services advertised on the Autotrader website under 'parts and salvage'. I have used them a few times before and find the responses very poor. Would you believe that not one of the thousands of scrapyards that are part of these networks had a Vauxhall 2.0 16v engine or an Audi 80 Avant load cover when I requested one. I was quite surprised to get a response to my Porsche caliper request although it has been the only one so far.

                    seat carriers

if you turn them round and use a 32mm spacer between the hub and the carrier, they fit with a 304mm disc from a seat ibiza - R (im on 4 stud) but if you got a disc with the same off set that is all you would have to do to make them fit

                    regards
                    will

incidently after making mine fit - i sold them with the ibiza calipers

so making carriers from scratch now for boxster calipers

The brackets can be used but need machining to fit. Drop Tekkno300 a line if you are interested. He is looking into bracketry issues at the moment.
