    Turn down a 12mm disc to 10mm

I am looking for a rear disc and all I can get so far is the ALLROAD C6.

    Brake Disc
    Diameter (mm): 302
    Thickness (mm): 12
    Min (mm): 10
    HT (mm): 42
    B (mm): 68
    N: 5
    Type: Solid
    OE Ref: 4F0615601G

Has anybody used this disc on the rears and turned them down to 10mm to get the hat height of 40?

Alternativly has anybody used a 12mm thick disc without any issues, apart from grinding a bit of metal; away.

My preference would be to turn the 12mm disc to 10mm thick.

Bracket etc is simple to have made.

I know other discs have been used but due to availability I am at this stage only looking at the above 302mm disc.

    Used 11mm with some grinding.

There's a disc off a Mazda 5 (people carrier) that I designed brackets for. Works a treat or you can go to Mazda 6 MPS 314mm like me

I have contacted Mazda in South Africa and they do not have that disc. They say it will cost quite a bit to import. The same goes for other aftermarket suppliers.

Audi can supply the 12mm disc which is why I am asking about the skimming of the disc. I have never had a disc skimmed and I am concerned it may cause other problems.

I have also tried to get different callipers with the S8 disc, getting the calliper is an availability issue.

It will cause other problems, you want to skim it down to its minimum wear thickness?
If you did, you would have to skim 1mm off each face which would make the hat height 41mm.

Sorry I don't quite agree with I will be taking it to the minimum thickness.

Yes in its normal application 10mm is the minimum.

The application is for the S2 which like the Allroad has a solid disc.

The Allroad solid disc is 12mm and a minimum 10mm compared to the standard S2 of 10mm which has a minimum of 8mm. Both are solid disc's.

Taking off 2 mm from the back side of the Allroad disc should result in a hat height of 40mm as per the standard S2 disc.

Basically allowing a further 2mm of wear before replacement as per the S2 standard disc. Wear of 1mm per side before replacement.

Had the rear disc been ventilated then I would agree removing 2mm would not be advised.

Looking at a few sites they recommend skimming disc's on the car.

I cannot see any issues if the skimming is done correctly.

Surely, doesn't the cost of skimming raise the price to nearer that of a disc that's the right size to begin with?

This doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Rear discs are not huge money and will last almost forever...

they arent expensive in the UK but as he says they may well not be available in africa and the cost of shipping from uk for instance would be massive i dare say

But Mazda said they 'could' import them...

I understand shipping, duty, tax, etc... but there has to be a better option. URS4 caliper and S4 disc for example... if available...

Unfortunately they are when you have to import them to South Africa.

Trust me would much prefer to be able to get the parts off the shelf.

The 12mm disc appears to be the best option at present.

Can't you adjust the manufacture of your bracket by 2mm to suit 42mm height?

                        Turn down a 12mm disc to 10mm

Can you shim the 12mm disc out by 1mm to centre it in the calliper? Or will it not fit? You can always skim a mm off the pads.

Anyway, apart from the hassle, I can't see any problem with skimming the back of that disc down to 10mm.

                            I can adjust the bracket.

And I can trim the pads.

At present all I have read about the 12 mm disc is you need to take metal off the carrier which is not what I would like to do.

Trimming the pads could be part of the answer but if that does not fit then it would be back to the skimming with standard pads.

You will need to take 4mm off a 12mm discs to take the hat height down to 10mm - 2mm off each face.
