  • Brake pad backing plate thingies

On my current Textar pads in my 996 calipers there are shim plates glued to the back of the pads. They have metal sprung cups that sit inside the piston.

    Can these be re-used?

Do they need to be glued to the pads and if so, what glue does one need to use?

If I need new ones, does anyone have a part number?

They sound like the "Anti-squeal shims" that Brembos use to reduce brake squeak, and also act as a thermal layer to reduce heat input back in to the brake fluid.
You can re-use them if they're not too bashed up. They don't need to be glued AFAIK, at least mine aren't. If you want replacements, VAG Parts sell them, they're not particuarly expensive. Some people (MikeS2 I think) actually run without them to no noticable ill effect.

      Cheers Dan.

My Hawk HPS pads have just arrived, I'm a bit eager to fit them. The 996's with Textars aren't as good as the Alcon calipers with Mintex I had previous. Hopefully these should give an improvement.

At £33 including delivery from Cambridge Motorsport they have to be worth a shot.

Damn, just discovered a split cv joint and I need to replace a wheel bearing. D'oh.

I've not heard of Hawk pads at all. I'm running Ferodo DS2500s and they're the best pad I've ever used. Well worth the £165 asking price

IIRC porsche OEM use a sticky pad between plate and pad. I would check it out with a porsche specialist or search the posts here.

The squeal shim itself comes with a slightly sticky backing too it - you have to peel off a brown coated paper cover before you put it in the caliper, it's slightly tacky, but it's definitely not "gluey".
Porsche apparently recommend to run the calipers dry - ie. no copaslip. I chucked a gallon of the stuff in

I use the plate with Nickel anti seize on the back. Recommended from a Porsche tech. He said they never restick them to the back of the pads.

They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.

Car is booked in Friday for the cv boot and wheel bearing. Will have to wait until they're done before fitting the pads.
