    HI Paul,

We have now gone direct to Beru for coil packs now as they are identical to OE Audi and miles cheaper. People know us for Genuine OE part only, but sometimes.... its just plain cheaper to go direct to manufacturer.

So these are direct from Beru and come with the spark plug boot and new wires, BUT neither Beru or OE coil packs can possibly ever come with the wiring plug on the end!! there are 4 wiring plug for the 5 coilpacks and the paired up wires go down heat insulating protective tubing each and then the plugs go on. I personally cut the wires about 6 inch from the tci plugs and soldered the new wiring on. I'll post a couple more pictures below.

Its expensive yes, but what can you do... all ABY and ADU's should have a 'service interval' on these packs of about 120,000 as they are all going to be rotten by this time. Worst case I was worried about (and I saw this recently on another S2 members car) was that the coil pack wiring shorted out and blew one TCi unt!! so not only five coil packs were need, but also one TCI unit, and they are really expensive! plus our cars have TWO tci units, Don't want the expense of replacing those babies!

The performance gain is a lot after fitting these new ones, the old ones just cannot give the needed spark and as you know, mines only running 280hp so for anyone running more hp, then the effect will be miles worse!

I've kept my 5 old ones , altough they are little use as all the wiring to every pack is shot to pieces. It's not the coil pack that is failing, its the wiring that is the main curse. THe wiring is like epoxy sealed intop the pack, maybe it could be replaced...?

    Here's some more pictures:

I agree this is worthwhile, but its an expensive venture. Mine are certainly looking past their best but I'd like to cook up some good electrical tests before consigning any of them to the bin.

Hoping that Greg will bring his expensive multimeter to Billing for some group conductance testing Hope you haven't thrown out your old ones yet - they'd be good for measurements !

old packs and OE wiring, wire splits down each protective tubing, thats the reason Beru don't fit TCI plugs on the end and you have to solder them:

I soldered the connections, insulated with tape and then used heat shrink tubing to protect the joints:

The wiring was really good at about 6 inch from the plugs, so that's where I cut and joined them.

These Beru packs are a lot less than Audi ones, so we've now sourced packs direct from them. We will always try to carry 5 packs in stock at all times @ £57+vat each pack. I'm sure no one will mind the fact they are paying £30 less per pack because it comes in a Beru box rather than an Audi box??!!

never noticed this before though... each of the packs has a 'window' and it seems like a red led style digit appears in the window when the pack is powered... odd....

My OE ones are numbered like that... I'd never realised the coilpacks were listed as a service item at 120k and thats just about what my car is on now... Looks like another £300 will be added to the winter rebuild fun and games

Mine were changed after 160k and they only seemed to start playing up after i gave my car a really severe drive round some country lanes and it all got very very hot!!!

Following morning they were playing up, it may well have just been a wiring thing tho as you can see they get damaged, i know with my new ones that the car is running much smoother and sweeter than before.

Martyn thats a good price, i managed to haggle ECP down to that price and they are as i said BERU, the numbers on them are all identical, all they are missing is the branded VW Audi logo and Audi Part No. Anyone silly enough to pay the £125+VAT for just the coilpack from Main Dealer is mad!

so the new coil packs, are the cables with them long enough to reach the plug?

also what should I use to wrap them up with to keep the heat out? any perticular tape?

New coilpacks all are plenty long enough, no issues at all with the length on them, i cut off loads to make them the correct length, only took about an hour to do from start to finish.

I re-used the thick heat shielding that was around the originals, its a long sleeve which just slid off and was in fine condition.
