Its gonna be one of three things, if fuses are OK -

1 - Bad earth. Theres a bunch of brown wired eyelets in the A-pillar. Check all those are tight.

2 - Bad rheostat... or the connectivity of it out of the cluster

3 - Lighting amplifier (current booster) down by the aux guages as mentioned.

I'll point thee at the right schematic momentarily.

Thanks Paul. im sure it must be something behind the aux gauges as it was fine before i messed about behind there.

        http://www.s2central.net/S2_Schematics/B/B73.PDF - look for sheets 7 & 8. J166 is the current booster...

which is connected to rheostat E20 here also http://www.s2central.net/S2_Schematics/D/D44.PDF - see sheets 12-16 of interest

Numerous fuses involved for one thing - not counting ones for main lights

Ill have a check through and see if i can find anything. Im sure there is just something not connected behind the aux gauges. Is it a MOT failure if the dash lights dont work?

Right just been outside to check fuse 14. Sure enough it has blown. I changed it and put a 10A just to see if it would work, didnt work it has just blown that one to. tried anothe 5A and it has blown that one to. Something most be shorting and blowing the fuse.

Unplug the connector at the lighting booster module... maybe that is causing the short circuit. Try a new fuse with that disconnected.

If the fuse still blows, then it could be a fault inside the light switch stalk itself - disconn that next and try again.

And when you have tried all that and nowt is helping, you can pay me a large amount of money to admit what the fault was at the beginning of this thread

is the lighting booster module the one directly behind the aux gauges, attached to the same panel? As ther is also another similar looking unit a little further back under the heating controls

yes its down there by the aux guages... look at the wire colours and connector denomination to help...

Like a 'T6x' label means the connector has 6 pins, but they may not all be used. After that go by wire colours.

Disconnected it and still no change. Im sure it is nothing to do with behind the cluster because it was fine until i fiddled about behind the aux gauges. As soon as i put the lights on it just blows the fuses. Does anyone know if Dash lights are put of the MOT? Was going to book my car in on Friday!

I've just refitted my carpet and centre console etc and seem to have no dash lights, no aux gauges lights, no heater lights, no fog and other switch lights(all guages, controls work - but no lights in the back)

I have just stripped the console back again and have been reading the posts above.

I checked the relay behind the aux gauges was connected which it was , but still no lights. I have removed the relay.......3 pin part details as follows:

                        893.919.080
                        VDO
                        412.210/004/001
                        12V 3.6W

                        the thre pins are marked

                        58D 58d

                        58

IS IT POSSIBLE MY FIDDLING HAS CAUSED THIS TO BLOW?????

                        I can't test this relay can I?

                        Anyone help?

                        Cheers

Have you checked the fuses? I've blown a fuse a couple of times by getting a short on the cig lighter bulb wiring..

No 4 - Fuse 15amp was fine - I've changed it anyways, still no change though - no dash lights.

I rang Audi Leicester earlier - the part no above is still on the system - so not obsolete.

The Stealer has quoted £46.00plus VAT! WTF!

Anyone on here have a spare? Would be willing to pay £20.00 for it(TIMES ARE HARD)

Jesus!!! I'm getting a bit hacked off now....

I spent a couple of hours earlier today (in between the rain) changing over the Relay ((Booster for Dash Lighting) spare supplied from Jonny Bravo - thanks.

I went to turn on the lights...........and surprise surprise nothing in the dash. I could not tell if the Aux Gauges were lighting up so one by one took them out the clusters - they were working but really really dim....

I then swapped back my original Relay - thinking this was not going to work...but it did - but again the Aux lights were really dim and the Main clusters - nothing....

This is really getting my goat!!!

Have I got an interuption in the current or are both Relays K-Put and not able to boost all the lights?

I did notice that the cigarette lighter and ashtray lights were both working but again all very very dim.

I have been reading some of the other threads on this topic, but I'm struggling now!!!

Instrument lights are fuse 14 not 4, check that one. I just had a problem with mine it kept blowing when ever I replaced it, the rear ashtray light had come lose and was grounding out on the tunnel.
