The sensor on a cq20v is clipped onto the back of the main grill, just to the right of the audi rings if your looking at the car. Daft place to put it, whenever you stop and the radiator fan runs it blows hot air over it. Every time i'm stuck in traffic its 40 degrees outside

thanks Mark - i'll check it out later. I'll need to locate the sensor end of the loom as i know for a fact there is nothing attached to the back of my grill - i've had it off often enough in the last couple months

If you have the connector in the loom at the back of the clocks you are 99% of the way there. You'll need to trace the sensor wire. The sensor would be located just slightly below and behind the N/S headlamp. You should find a two pin multiplug feeling all lonely down there.
If the plug isn't down there and you can't trace the wire it's easy enough to run one from there up through the engine bay and into behind the clocks. As said above, it doesn't matter which of the two wires on the sensor goes to ground or to the connector.

Sensor part number is 4A0 820 535. IIRC they aren't a huge amount.

Tip, if you have air-con and it isn't working and you don't intend getting it working, you have a temperature sensor you can use located in the heater blower fresh air intake

          Jas..
Just to clarify what jason posted here - that device in the fresh air intake only exists as an air temp *sensor* on cars equipped with digital aircon... On the cars equipped with manual aircon (thats everyone in the RHD world) then that device is just an ambient air temp *switch* so it wont drive the ambient temp display module. Strange but true !

Any luck finding the other end for the sensor? Should be somewhere around the back of the passenger side headlight.

i'll be honest mark, i've not really investigated that much... i had a quick look about when i had the bumper off to do the cambelt, but didn't see it..
I'm taking the headlights out soon to put new lenses on, i'll have a proper dig about then... don't suppose you have a pic of what it looks like Mark?

I have the same black plug behind my dials but have not done much to it lately to update this, been sorting my leather recaro's and hid's at present. Will have a look asap.

Just having a look at retro fitting one of these in my Coupe today. (Except it took me so long to find the parts I bought years ago that it's now dark! )

Anyway... I don't seem to have the loom behind the dash but I've got the plug so I'll just have to wire it in which is a job for another day now. I need to get myself a temp sensor and I'm wondering what type. Is it one of these with the later "D" shaped connector as they only seem to be listed for 1996 onwards? Or should it have a JT type connector?

                          http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A3-OU...item232e3747c3

I've got a bunch of wires down behind the LH headlight that are left over from the AC loom, wondering if I can use a pair of those for the sensor

Alex, did you ever get this working in your car? Was the dash loom hidden away or was it part of the loom for the clocks? I'm wondering whether to take the under-dash out again to have a search for it.
