@ Pete - thanks, so exuse my dumb-*** question, but what's the difference between an H1 and an H4?
I thought Sid was selling an H1 kit, which presumably isn't the same? Or am I being dumb?

      Dan,
If you've got non-elipsoid lamps you'll need H4. This is what Sidspud is selling. H1's are for elipsoid lamps. For difference in bulb appearance see here

I've got the old Mr Magoo-style "can't actually see in the dark" non-projector-style lights, which is why I tend to use my fog lights almost the entire time I'm driving in the dark officer. I do need the H4 by the sound of it. I'll drop Kenny a line methinks...

I'll be posting an update on the new 'extreme!' HID's today, I am VERY happy with the outcome so far they are a little way from being finished, but at long last they are a reality and..... these REALLY punch out light. Pictures soon....

not been set yet as we're still some way from finishing the testing and also, we may supply a few extra spares and parts in the new kits.

Why has my autocheck bulb warning just started coming on?
I have been running the H1 HID kit in my RS2 for 10 months with no problems & then in the last week the autocheck bulb warning has started to come on. Doesn't do it with just sidelights on & the HIDs are working just fine and no other bulbs blown.
Could be a faulty bulb warning relay I guess - time to do the empty relay routine maybe - but I thought that was only necessary with the H4 HID kit??

HID H4 headlamp aim all skew

Ok, I installed my H4 HHD kit today, which took me close on 4 hours

Had a horrible time drilling a hole large enough in the back of the bulb covers for the to allow for back of the HID unit to not foul it. This seemed to be a real bodge. I also don't seem have any rubber grommits to seal this gaping hole, so rather worried about water ingress in to the back of the headlights...

Located the two ballasts ok, having removed my airbox there's plenty of room to work in on in that side of the car, but on the other, well, see below...

Had a harder time trying to find a sensible place to locate the control unit, but got there in the end.

Also had an awful time getting the left side unit placed in situ - I've got airconditioning and there is so little room to work in! Changing my sidelight bulb was an exercise in contortionism, and skinned hands...

Haven't done the autocheck "fix" yet, but it doesn't actually beep at me at t the moment, so maybe I don't have to?

Took the car out for a drive at dusk to gain some first impressions.
Very bright! I changed the H1s and the sidelights to the PIAAs as recommended. A huge improvement on the old lamps. Well worth the time and effort and lost skin!

My fog lights now look a very peculiar colour in contrast.

My concern though is headlamp aim.

5 cars flashed me in the space of 10mins, presumably complaining that my lights appeared to be on main beam, which they're not. Sitting in the car, it's clear the aim is too high. Even with the aim adjustment on 3, the horizontal of the beam is just too high.

Could I have knocked the headlamps out of alignment?

How do I fix the lamp aim?

To sort/cgeck out the aim, go to any MOT test centre and ask them to align them, they may charge you a few beer tokens

Is it as easy as that?! Don't suppose you know what size allen key it is?
What's the height I should actually aim for it to be aiming at? Is there a proper measurement I can do by shining my lights against a wall at a certain distance or something and measuring how low it should reach, or should I just spend the beer tokens?!

You cant align them laterally properly with the wall method. Most places charge about a fiver or so.

We have a special headlamp aligner at work.

Thanks Dan, for making me go outside to check. I'd left my garage unlocked.
6mm will do the trick. At least you can get them level for the moment, even if you decide to spend your beer tokens.

Is the lateral likely to have got messed up too do you think?

I'll have a go with Mr Allen for now and see if I still upset other road users with my lights, if not for my driving style

Glad I was able to help you check your garage! Wish I had a garage...

Thanks again for the rapid advice: this forum is truely a wonderful place
