Reading the post further, it would appear this is your problem, the elipsoid used to glow with a filiment lamp in it, therefore you have the dim dip facility fitted. IIRC this was a legal requirement in uk for a time... Also, you meter 11.8 V with the sidelight on, this would be the case, but the current would be limited with the resistor. I dont have a wiring diagram here, but i am sure just unplugging it will do the trick, i had to do it on an old 205 i had as one broke, and IIRC the Audi one is very similar physically, its cylindrical, 2 or 3 inches long and about 3/4" dia.
Another HID prob

@ 4 wheel drifter - I presume it is (j plate 91) and I had both wires plugged into the stalk (yellow wire and brown and white as mentioned in the other thread I made) at present it has the yellow wire fitted in point 8 I wanted to check it first with that before adding in the brown/white one which I was planning on doing tommorow.
@ Mad pugger - It does not do it if I have the ignition off and sidelights on, it only does it with ignition on and sidelights on, works perfect with the full lights on.
I'll have to have a look thru some of the threads as i've no idea which one this is.I dont have a wiring diagram here, but i am sure just unplugging it will do the trick, i had to do it on an old 205 i had as one broke, and IIRC the Audi one is very similar physically, its cylindrical, 2 or 3 inches long and about 3/4" dia.
Thanks for all your help

No worries, it will likely be just below a headlamp, probably the N/S one attatched to the chassis with a plastic clamp... it will have to be connected to the headlamp wiring, so shouldnt be too hard to find

I had a look for the bit you was on about the twin white plug that was on there I disconnected on both sides but this still made no difference which is annoying.
I also need to get it sorted asap because till I get to a garage and get the aim checked i'm getting fed up with people stopping and saying are my main beams on or flashing me. I can't adjust it on the inside as for some stupid reason since swapping the motors over from one headlight to the other they don't want to do much but you can hear one going.
Is there any special trick to get them to swap over and click in to the headlight so they will work?Comment

The ball on the end of the rod coming out of the motor, needs to clip into the cup on the back of the reflector itself. Have a peer insde and you'll see it. It's a lot easier typed than done though. Can be a bit of a pain.
To make it easier, hook the motor up and turn your switch on the dash so that the rod extends out of the motor as far as it will go.
Don't forget, you've also got the manual adjustment screws on the top of the lamp itself. You can turn the vertical adjuster (can't remember offhand whether it's the inboard allen screw, or the outboard) so that the reflector is pulled in at the top (in effect adjusting your beam to aim real high). This makes the reflactor that little bit closer to the ball on the end of the rod.
Put a little bit of grease on the end of the ball, it helps to clip into the cup easier.
Sorry, no idea of this strobe effect thing

Exactly
Not sure what you mean dude? If it's dusk, I usually have sidelights on, then when dark enough, go to dipped beam (HID's).2001 Avus Silver B5 RS4.

How many people out there are happy with their HID conversion.
I'm still on the old set up.
Dipped :
Main fine
I'll need more convincing, just seems to many posts relating to probs with conversion.
If I did more night driving, then yeah probably make the change.

Never had a problem with mine. Not even a hiccup in over two years.
Used nigh on every day of the week.
I'd rather drive at 2mph behind a bloke with a zippo than go back to the original candle powered madness.

If I put mine on the first setting on the stalk I get strobe light effects so i've been using full on which works fine tho seems very very bright compared to any setup i've seen its as if i've got the mainbeams on which has already got me flashed once and had a go at by a lady who stopped in front of me and complained.
I have since used the adjusters on the headlights to put them down as much as I can, going to make sure the motors are in properly tommorow so I can use the dash switch. Just out of interest what is the setting where the motor is fully extended iirc its 0Comment

Seems like you have a wiring issue there Pete, First setting of the light stalk should be sidelights "only", next click dipped beam (sidelight still on too), next click highbeam (if you have done the wiring mod correct, dipped stays on and again, sidelight "on")
I'm thinking the wiring mod you have done isn't correct mate.

All I did with the wiring was moved the yellow wire from the top to the bottom (same as pictured in the thread I started) and spliced in the brown/white wire.
If i start the car and click the stalk up once I get the sidelights and strobe lights.
second click give normal lights and sidelights
move forward get all the lights (side/normal/main)Comment

I saw one earlier but did not see one under the passenger side.
