It's the first move of the stalk that isn't right Pete. though you prolly realise that)
Got to be something to do with the wiring splicing at the stalk. You are getting current of a small nature down to the dipped beam circuit, hance the pulsing (HID's pulse when the input voltage is too low)
Until you can sort this, STOP using them straight way mate, the ballasts won't thank you..

I'll need more convincing, just seems to many posts relating to probs with conversion.
If I did more night driving, then yeah probably make the change.

Not had a single problem in 3 years with the Vagparts kit.

The difference in lighting is scary.

doh, atm ain't got no choice tonight as i have to drive home with the car only a short journey, I don't get strobe effects when on fully tho, just really not sure what to do with the wiring.

As long as they aren't strobing on the second click of the stalk (dipped beam) than you'll be ok. Just try and avoid making the ballast strobe like that. In effect you are switching the ballast on and off at a very fast rate. They don't like being switched on and off rapidly and die quickly.

Yeah I saw your comment at the start of the thread about this, thats why I start up and switch straight to main beam which they just stay on normally. Just gotta work out what i'm going to do about the other problem.

What I would start with is using the original lamps, i.e. just plug back in the H4's and make sure they dont come on with the resistor unplugged, just to ensure that you have definately unplugged the right thing. The fact that your lights are fine on sidelights with the ignition on really suggests that this is your problem...

I did have the standard lights working yesterday when I had them on the normal bulbs when I first used them without the stalk mod the projector part switched off as everyone said it would. I changed over the yellow wire into the point that the brown/white wire was in and this meant that the projector stayed on. I then fitted the HID's thats when I found the strobeing problem.

Do you know where the resistor is as I found underneath both headlights a twin white plug on a white clip which I did unplug but this made no different so I don't think it was that what you was referring to.

I guess its back to candles, for fuuks sake! why carn't things be made right!

                      What kit do you have?

I found with the one that I first off could not get working that it was the earth, just to check I fitted it to the ballast on the side that worked which worked fine,I then looked at the earth point for the drivers and that was my problem. Also found it is possible on the two different kits i've got that you can put the plug that goes into the ballast the wrong way round.

                      good luck

Try giving the offending ballast pack a tap with a hammer. I've had a few like that now, they've worked fine ever since. It's like the ******s need waking up after storage.

I've heard of having to do that as well luckily I have not had to do that, if I can't sort out the strobing think I might try that

                            @ Acidburn

What i mean is, with the H4's in and the ignition on with sidelights only, have you managed to stop the dipped beam to 'Glow'? By dipped beam, I mean the one behind the projector if you have the elipsoids fitted now. If with the plug you found un-plugged, then this will be the resistor. If the H4, or H1 or whatever filiment lamp you want to use, still glows, then i would suspect you will have this strobe problem until you disable the dim dip. I am offshore otherwise i would go find the one on my 80Q to tell you exactly where it is.

Maybe start a thread Dim Dip resistor or WHY.

It still glows, I tried unplugging the two plugs still no change been looking on the car trying to find something that it might be but no luck yet.

Lol wish you was back by your 80. I'll let this thread go for a while longer as getting a few replys but will keep it in mind about the dip resistor.

If it still glows then i am sure this will be the cause, as not all pre elipsoid models had dim dip therefore not everyone will have this issue...

Still, if you start a thread to even find out where the resistor is you could atleast eliminate it if im talking utter pish!
