hmm - D**N I didn't do it but specifically told the garage to do it even gave them a copy of the pictures, oh well guess I'll have to check and do it myself. Is it just a case of taking the shelf out to get at this connector?

It's under the top steering wheel cowl. Just get a pozi driver up to the two recessed holes on the lower cowl and remove the top (As if you were going to remove the instrument cluster)
You'll see the connector on the back of the left set of stalks

not sure if i posted up how i cured the problem of mine strobing but i changed the light switch stalk and all worked ok. i knew i had some fault as the headlight was getting a 6vish feed when on sidelight position. this is fine with a regular fillament bulb but with the hid it wasnt enough to trigger the ballast pack to stay on.

okay so I switched the yellow wire from pin 7 to pin 8, however a brown/yellow was already in pin 8, I moved this to pin 1 as shown in Jas's picture. everything seems to be ok but does anybody know what the brown/yellow wire is? I'm assuming that it's not an issue moving it to pin1 as the picture shows it pin 1 already
so just been out down some dark country lanes with the ellipsoids and HID's fitted, you can hardly tell the difference between the dips and main beam. The good news is no strobing and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for all the help folks
I've got this strobing now exacltly as Acidburn has so i'm sure it is a feature of the early wiring.
* No ignition, first stalk click is just sidelights.
* Still on first click, turn the key - strobing effect, sometimes they light sometimes they go out
* More to second click on stalk and all works fine.
I had to upgrade the two main beam fuses to 15A as they blew twice in the normal 10A guise, now all working fine I get main beam as well as the HIDs on the forward click, and just the main beam on the flash pull.
So this is strobing is definately an issue with the CQ and early 3B wiring
Has anyone got a late light stalk i can try to see if this is a the cure?
I'm going to reinstall the normal H4s and see if they do indeed have the dim-dip as i've never noticed it before, but then again never really been looking for it.
Also in this thread Jase has told me why my passenger side lights stay on when I get out of the car after parking it with the indicator on - i thought i had a bad earth or something!
Strange, i never read anything about it in the manual

yeah parking lights work on both sides, ignition off, keys out, flick the indicator for either side and the side and rear light will stay on.... Far as I know most german cars do this
Yeah i've still got this problem, i've got a spare stalk that I might try to switch in asap to see if it sorts this. Just not been doing much with the s2 lately
well i'm going to wip the hids out this evening and go back to normal H4s for the time being as i don't want to mess up the ballasts.
I'll report back on the the dim-dip with the normal lights.. I have a haynes manual for the 80/90/coupe which has wiring schematics but i'm ****ed if i can understand that geek waffle lol. I can maybe bring it into work and scan it see if one of the electrical bods on here can suggest a solution.
Maybe its just a wire that need removing from the switch plug who knows.

H4 is a dip/main beam bulb in itself Alex. It's a twin filament bulb. When on dipped beam one filament is lit.
Go to highbeam and the other lights up (can't remember if the other goes out or they both stay on) Also the highbeam H1 bulb comes on too.
Edit, I can remember. On going to highbeam, the dipped filament goes out and the other comes on. Pull back fully on your stalk (flash your lights) and both would be lit.

The reason you have this is because you don't have traditional "sidelights" you have dim-dip as someone mentioned. That's why you've got 6v at the dipped beam contacts on the first stalk position.
If you take the dipped beam out of the equation, i.e. disconnect it for a minute, what happens on the first stalk position? I'm guessing nothing? As I'm guessing you don't have an actual sidelight bulb?
The only thing I can think of is to run a seperate sidelight feed with a relay to a non-existant sidelight bulb.. hmm

no i have separate sidelight bulbs... 501 type in the twist-in bulb holder same as elipsoids.
I am running 3B headlamps on the CQ now in case you're wondering
Jase I know there are two filaments for hi/low operation on the H4s, this issue seems to be on the wiring for the early cars had a low voltage feed to the dipped H4s so they had a faint glow as well as the sidelights when on the first stalk click and ignition on. (TBC later when i have chance to try the stock H4s instead of the HIDs)
From my experiences as well as other guys above, the older cars seem to supply 6v to the dipped filaments, which is causing the problems.... if we can find the cause of this 6v supply on sidelight setting then this is the problem
