Doddgy windows on 2.0L audi coupe

CAn anybody tell me why the electric windows on my frinds car works when it wants to, is this likely to be the motor or relay...if so could someone give me locations of where to possible start looking first.

    Cheers

    Several places to look.

Firstly is this the old shape coupe with the rubber windsceen seal? If so, and maybe on later ones too, you can get a water leak through the bottom of the screen on the passenger side, the water runs down and corrodes the ground tag for the window motors, just in front of the door, behind the dash. To fix the cause is a screen out job , but some silicon sealant pumped in will do the trick for a while, or pump in a load of Waxoil, the screen rubber will go funny for a couple of days but will recover.

Switches can go bad from arcing, you can take them apart and clean them, fiddly job.

Motors can seize their bearings, again they can be stripped greased up and re-fitted, also fiddly.

Finally the wire can fracture where it goes through into the door, it gets bent every time you open and close, sometimes you have a joint in the sleeving of the loom at this point which acts as a hinge...

I'm sure there's other possibilities too..
