i have just replaced both my mirror glasses (s6) i had 12v or so going to the mirror but no heat, they seem on mine to have some sort of thermo cutout as they aren't on for as long as the timer on the hrw.

yeah i think from memory my old 90 was like that. if you pull off the mirror glasses pop a multi meter on the wires and see what volts you get, on the back of my drivers mirror (s6) i have a little knob looking thing that i think is a thermo cutout, i doubt you will have that.
New mirror glasses almost certainly i am afraid, mine were approx £65.00 for the pair.
I am pretty sure that the heated jets are not on a timer, but are always on when the ignition is on.
The heated mirrors run on the same switch circuit and fuse as the heated rear window, therefore on earlier cars, such as my 2.8 Coupe (MY93) the hrw stayed on all the time, so did the mirrors, where as on my MY95 S2, the hrw and mirrors and on a 9 minute timer.
I have had several mirrors stop heating over the last 15 years of Audi ownership and on every occasion it was the element in the glass itself. If one is working, try swapping the glass over, coz I bet ya that it will work on both sides, proving that it is the heater element that is faulty
