  • Under dash tidy up

Wasn’t looking forward to this job but it went ok, a couple of hours tracing, snipping and soldering and it fired up, central locking on the key.
Still need to remove a wedge of wires from the driver’s side door jam area but it’s drivable.
A few kilos of crap removed, battery now holding a charge, alarm not going off randomly even when I don’t set it, no more flaky fob switches!
I think one of the boxes is a tracker with a lead acid backup battery?

Anyone know what this spring is for and where it should be hooked to?

Nice work. Mine looks like a rats nest and I really don't want to touch any of it, just in case something stops working.

I've tried 3 363 relays (one brand new) and still have problems so must be the connecting board or wiring behind it looks like I'm gonna have to pull it all out

That spring should not be there, at least there's none on LHD cars. Looks like someone in the past had some issues with clutch pedal not coming back
Underdash wiring is horrible from factory and gets even worse if alarm or LPG "specialists" gets their hands on it.

mine used to run with two immobilisers on it...i remember after playing the 'lottery will it start' game whilst on a roadtrip with Ciaran several years back I had the old and failing one removed, the amount of wiring that was removed was amazing. Do you remember how much I pulled out of my coupe when I lost the keys? Several kilos of wire and boxes, some of them very mysterious

I'm currently removing an aftermarker immo and alarm, nightmare... will post a pic of all the removed wires when done.

It’s always a bad moment when you see that great big bundle of wires wrapped in black insulating tape and zip ties under there and disappearing behind the centre console, the bundle in my first pic is completely gone now.

another issue is the reconnecting of the ori wires that were cut when the immo was installed, e.g. the one to the locking in the door

Tesa tape is really good for this job too, I used it when I was tidying up under my dash when I did the heater matrix. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TESA-TAPE...PdKvEWGIF_pfMQ

Mine had that alarm too, was it factory fit? Was horrifically installed and was the first thing I removed when investigating electrical gremlins too.

No way that was factory fit, long zip ties not cut off, self tappers into bodywork, the back battery gaffa taped to the tracker box ( think it was a tracker as it looked to have an RF wire)
Wires cut, twisted together, soldered and leccy taped, so the tape was old and starting to fall off in places, perfect for a short circuit!

To be honest, that's not so dissimilar to the dealer-fit Audi branded alarm/remote locking my B3 had fitted, was horrid.

And yes, TESA tape is wonderful stuff, re-wrapped lots when I did my heater matrix.

Funny you should say that, that's what my dealer fit alarm and remote locking install looked like in the 90 20V saloon.

The Audi or Votex kit is good though and rare.
