If using a new belt, approx 2mm movement between pulleys using firm thumb pressure. Used belt is approx 5mm.

You definitely got the right belt? They rarely snap, even when very tight. Also, check pulleys for damage.

Using a slight shorter one as the tensioner I use is at it's limit with an 890cm belt so dropped to 878cm, the last one that snapped however was from TPS so would of been the right one. Looked under the car just now and the remains of the last one were wrapped around the pulley stripped to the wire, nightmare getting it all off

Twist the belt 90 degrees, if you do this it is not too tight, if it easily goes more than 90, it is too slack!

                  Always test on longest run.

2mm movement sounds too tight to me.
